EMPOWER TO PERFORM.....For a Generation of Engaged Self-Leaders

In this week's newsletter, I am shining the spotlight on HIGH PERFORMING TEAMS, and why we need to focus more on the individuals within teams, empowering them as self-leaders, to increase engagement and performance.??

A recent study in the Harvard Business Review revealed that 71% of respondents agree that employee engagement is very important to the overall success of the organization.?However, 39% of employees stated that not getting recognition for their work was their main reason for wanting to leave their current job. (Gallup)

What is happening?

It is no secret that employee engagement is a significant problem for organisations. Disengagement and disconnection are now commonplace as we emerge from the pandemic and hybrid working giving individuals the opportunity to re-evaluate their careers.?

There are many elements contributing to this, including a growing lack of confidence and courage by individuals to step up, own their value and contribute at a level that is aligned to their competence and expertise.?Under-rating ones value and contribution is very damaging for an individual’s own personal growth and career prospects. This damage is not confined to the employee, the employer also suffers because of disengagement and disconnection.????

There are two sides to this problem. People need to know their own value and they also need to?feel like they are being recognized for high-quality valuable work. It is a universal truth that everybody responds positively to feeling valued and recognised.?

What can we do?

Empowering, encouraging, and engaging individuals is a critical component for growth and development, alongside each individual having the skills to self-lead and become less dependent on others to bring out their value and potential so that they perform at their best in the zone where they are most confident and competent.?

If we want a fulfilling and accomplished career, we need to have the confidence and courage to step up, take the lead and know that challenges are an opportunity to learn and grow.?

This confidence and courage needs to be nurtured by the self and the organisation, by developing individuals' self-leadership skills and developing leaders who have the skills to nurture and grow top talent.?It needs to be a joint effort, not placing all the responsibility on one or the other, both need to own their part.???

In order to empower employees to be self-leaders who will grow and develop into a high-performing team, they need to learn the skills to be effective self-leaders, so that they have the courage to step up and fulfil their career vision and in doing so contribute with impact towards the vision and goals of the organisation.??

What does it mean to be an effective self-leader?

An effective self-leader takes responsibility for setting a vision and goals that they can work towards.?They operate with personal influence as they navigate their way towards their goals, not waiting for others to make it happen, or getting distracted by ‘opportunities’ that are not aligned with their vision.

  • They are very self-aware and are clear on where they are at their best and where they need to grow.?
  • They feel empowered to make decisions and be held accountable
  • They want to be part of continuous improvement and growth
  • They clearly articulate their value and are recognised accordingly
  • They are good communicators and have strong personal influence.
  • They hold a strong and engaging presence.
  • They build trust and credibility with peers and stakeholders.?

?So, what’s next?

Organizations and individuals need to take a proactive approach to develop a new generation of engaged self-leaders.?We need to start with the individual, and from there build high-performing teams.?The outcome is a strong team of self-leaders who are engaged, connected, growing, valued, innovative, satisfied, and getting results.?????

I meet so many professionals who are highly talented and feel they have outgrown their role and organisation.?In some cases, the organisation is not fully aware of this, and in other cases, they just do not know how to engage and retain their top talent.???When this misalignment of value occurs, both lose, but more so it is the organisation, while these individuals search for alternative opportunities where they feel more aligned to creating a positive impact on the vision and goals of the organisation.?
