Empower managers to manage mental health with confidence

Emotional Health Day took place over the weekend, serving as a powerful reminder to bring our emotional health to the forefront of our priorities, not just on this day but every day, recognising the ongoing need for positive mental wellbeing. This year’s theme of ‘anxiety’ aims to create open conversation, provide ideas of how to deal with anxiety symptoms and remove the stigma surrounding mental health.

In order for organisations to support employees with their mental health in the workplace, it's vital for employers, line managers, and HR professionals to have a clear understanding of how to support individuals with anxiety disorders. However, providing appropriate assistance can be challenging, especially without personal experience. Here are a few tips for supporting employees with their mental health:

?? Be proactive in spotting the signs

Promptly recognising signs of anxiety in employees can allow for early intervention including addressing stressors, reintegrating isolated team members, and helping them reach their full potential.

?? Adopt an open door policy

Encouraging open communication between employees and line managers helps to build trust, and facilitate closer working relationships. Providing employees with reassurance and support whenever needed can help to reduce the likelihood of feeling overwhelmed by internalising concerns.

?? Be flexible

Employers should be aware of their responsibility under the Reasonable Adjustments of the Equality Act 2010 and offer flexibility that may include allowing remote work to support recovery or facilitating time for therapy sessions.?

?? Provide training for managers

Training managers specifically in mental health support enables them to recognise signs, provide assistance and resources, and cultivate open communication which can ultimately contribute to increased productivity, reduced absenteeism, and enhanced job satisfaction.
