EMpower at 25: Driving Change, Shaping Futures

The Cambridge Dictionary chose “manifest” as the word of 2024, reflecting a growing interest in positive thinking to realise our visions for our futures. I also see it as a response to the desire many of us feel to exercise influence during these turbulent times—marked by political shifts in different countries, ongoing wars and violence, and stagnation in many markets. Climate change now affects every pocket of the globe in myriad ways, and technology continues to open vast new potential as well as threats.

At EMpower, we see the importance of both constancy and change. We remain unwavering in our mission of lifting up the perspectives of young people least included in their economies and societies. We remain committed to practicing values of trust, transparency, and integrity; to fostering learning; and to catalysing the finance and philanthropic sectors to make a better world with and for young people. Guided by the principles of trust-based philanthropy and an understanding of what is needed for durable change, we maintain our 10-year partnership approach.

Yet, in a world of turmoil and flux, we need to adapt and chart new ground to best serve the needs of young people. We are staying alert and remaining nimble, evolving to make sure that we can best respond to young people’s needs now and in the future. As an organisation, we are looking at how local communities are impacted by environmental havoc and how we can better support the climate-affected future of young people.

We have increased the number of staff in our countries of investment, with team members now in Argentina, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru, Nigeria, South Africa, and Turkey. We continue to support innovative organisations—including more that are youth-led—driving the breakthrough initiatives young people need. And the experience and wisdom of our youth fellows and councils in all regions continue to inform and advance our thinking.

I am especially heartened to see the growing number of change-makers joining our quest to expand horizons for young people. We’re seeing increased commitment, collaboration, and interest from philanthropically-minded firms, foundations doubling down on youth-led programming, and a widening and diverse circle of funders committed to young people’s mental health and wellbeing. We’re convinced of the multiplier effect of more partners and increased resources to manifest profound change for young people.

This year EMpower celebrates its 25th anniversary. Starting this month and all year long, we will be highlighting EMpower’s journey and vision for the future. With a legacy of listening to and learning from young people, deep roots in the finance sector, and a locally-focused yet globally-connected network of grantees, donors, and peers, EMpower is ready to meet the moment.
