Trans and Gender Diverse people in Australia have higher degrees at twice the rate of the general population and yet we are unemployed at 5 times the rate of the general population.

Many organisations have made huge leaps in providing transition support for their employees, meaning that those who are employed, and transition, have a better future. What is yet to happen is transformative action by those organisations to address the high levels of unemployment. I argue that what is required is targeted interventions. Employing trans and gender diverse people can have a transformative impact on their lives and life expectancy. Here are several ways in which employment makes a significant difference:

Economic Stability and Reduced Poverty

  • Income Security: Employment provides a steady income, reducing the risk of poverty. This financial stability allows individuals to afford basic needs such as housing, food, and healthcare.
  • Reduced Homelessness: With stable employment, individuals are more likely to secure and maintain housing, reducing the reliance on community housing and shelters.

Improved Mental and Physical Health

  • Access to Healthcare: Employment often comes with benefits such as health insurance, making it easier to access necessary medical care, including gender-affirming treatments and mental health services.
  • Mental Well-being: Having a job can improve self-esteem and mental health by providing a sense of purpose, reducing feelings of marginalisation, and fostering a sense of belonging. This can decrease the rates of depression and anxiety, which are disproportionately high in the trans and gender diverse community.

Social Integration and Reduced Discrimination

  • Workplace Inclusion: Being employed can facilitate social integration, helping individuals build networks and support systems. Inclusive workplaces can also challenge societal prejudices and promote greater acceptance.
  • Reduced Stigma: Employment helps combat the stigma associated with being trans or gender diverse by showcasing their contributions and talents, helping to change societal perceptions.

Long-term Health and Life Expectancy

  • Healthy Lifestyle: Economic stability allows individuals to afford healthier food options, exercise, and preventive care, which are critical for long-term health.
  • Stress Reduction: Financial and social stability reduce chronic stress, which is linked to numerous health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, and weakened immune function. Lower stress levels can contribute to a longer and healthier life.
  • Safety and Security: Stable employment reduces the need to engage in survival sex work or other high-risk activities, which can expose individuals to violence, exploitation, and health risks.

Empowerment and Advocacy

  • Personal Empowerment: Employment empowers individuals, providing them with autonomy and control over their lives, which is crucial for overall well-being.
  • Community Advocacy: Gainfully employed trans and gender diverse individuals can become role models and advocates within their communities, helping to push for broader societal changes and better policies.

Educational and Professional Development

  • Utilisation of Skills and Talents: Trans and gender diverse people with higher degrees are able to apply their skills and knowledge, leading to professional growth and personal satisfaction.
  • Breaking Stereotypes: Successful employment of trans and gender diverse individuals helps break down stereotypes and demonstrates their capability and potential, encouraging more inclusive hiring practices.

Employing trans and gender diverse people not only provides them with financial stability but also significantly enhances their mental and physical health, social integration, and overall quality of life. This, in turn, contributes to increased life expectancy and fosters a more inclusive and equitable society.
