To underscore the gravity of the situation, consider this: even if every unemployed person in the country were to find a job, we would still grapple with around 3 million unfilled positions. The disparity between job opportunities and available workers in the IT sector is glaring.
Diligent monitoring of the dynamics of job openings, labor force participation, quit rates, and more is carried out through our America Works Data Center, offering a quick insight into the state of the IT workforce. Further analysis of the national workforce is presented below, alongside an interactive map that tracks the worker shortage across states and a comprehensive examination of how the IT labor shortage is impacting different industries.
How did we find ourselves in this predicament? At the peak of the pandemic, over 120,000 businesses temporarily shuttered their doors, and over 30 million U.S. workers found themselves without employment. Subsequently, job openings have steadily risen since January 2020, while unemployment has gradually decreased.
However, the situation is complex. In 2022, employers managed to add a remarkable 4.5 million jobs. Nevertheless, millions of Americans have been departing the labor force since before the pandemic, and this trend continues. In fact, Americans are leaving the workforce altogether. If today's labor force participation rate were the same as it was in February 2020, we would have an additional 1.7 million Americans actively participating in the IT workforce.
Presently, the labor force participation rate stands at 62.7%, a decline from the 63.3% recorded in February 2020. Multiple factors contribute to this workforce exodus. A survey of unemployed workers who lost their jobs during the pandemic revealed a myriad of reasons preventing their return to work. Approximately 27% cited the need to care for children or other family members as a barrier to rejoining the workforce, while 28% mentioned health issues taking precedence over employment.
In addition to these factors, concerns about COVID-19 at the workplace, inadequate pay, and a focus on acquiring new skills and education before re-entering the IT job market also play a role.
The IT labor shortage is compounded by several key factors:
