The Employment Law Handbook – Book Review

Have you experienced situations where you are at crossroads on how to handle particular employment and/or labour-related issue at work?

The Employment Law Handbook by Jamiu Akolade is a 319-page book published in 2020.

Two notable Senior Advocates of Nigeria who incidentally are Chartered Arbitrators wrote the foreword to the book. The book is divided into three (3) parts. Part A deals with Legal Opinions on Employment Law and comprises 4 sections – commencement, scope, and termination of the employment relationship (1), fundamental rights in the workplace, compensation, and benefits (2), resolution of employment and industrial disputes (3), and employment and labour relations issues arising from COVID-19(4). Part B which focuses on the Synopsis of Employment Laws and Regulations covers 16 different laws and/or regulations. Part C covers 20 employment law precedents and templates that can be readily deployed.

What makes the book interesting is that it is easy to read. The author adopted the Question and Answer style to address critical questions employers and HR professionals grapple with on a day-to-day basis. While penning down this review, I received a request in my LinkedIn box about the legality of restrictive covenant clauses in employment contracts. This issue is adequately covered in this book. Part C makes your life easy with templates that you can readily adapt.

Although the book summarized the key points of the 16 labour laws and regulations, it would have been great if it included a complete copy of these laws and regulations for further reference, especially, for professionals who do not have copies readily available. The absence did not, however, subtract from the usefulness of the book.

I am pleased with the content and how it addresses pertinent issues. My advice to those who come to me for answers would be to consult this book first. When you don’t find what you are looking for, you can then reach out to me. This book is very useful to all professionals who have the responsibility to manage people and employee relations.

On a scale of 5, I rate this book a 4/5 as I genuinely loved and enjoyed reading it.
