Employment at a globally distributed company has its perks and dilemmas.
Evert, one of our TestLions, recently shared his experience working at a globally distributed company in an article for Personali Praktik, Estonia's leading magazine on HR.
Evert has learned that there are often no right or wrong answers in People and Culture management. The same question can be solved in many different ways depending on the company's culture or country, even though he would sometimes prefer the most? straightforward solution. Evert realized that this gets even more complex in a global setting when people with different backgrounds and work cultures meet and try to develop one consistent approach.
For example, a rising topic on his table is the issue of global pay equity. Salaries have always differed between countries, but recently he's seen an increasing number of cases where candidates from Eastern Europe expect to receive the same wage as employees in the UK or the US. That might seem fair at first glance, however, considering the different living costs and the average income of each country, the same salary can mean vastly different things. Offering global salaries is an attractive yet expensive perk. What would happen with smaller local companies if tech giants decided to pay their employees the same high salaries worldwide? Probably that small companies would not be able to afford to hire local talent.
Besides dealing with salary topics, Evert is also responsible for designing Testlio's benefits package, including a work-from-home stipend and reimbursement of several physical and mental health services. Supporting employees' mental health is becoming one of the critical challenges for HR departments Offering various benefits to support employees' health is one part of the equation, but Evert advocates for learning to notice if one of our colleagues is not doing well, especially remotely.
We can already see many companies planning their return to the office or future hybrid working models, which has already caused a wave of resignations in some organizations. Evert believes that being a globally distributed company and allowing people to work remotely from their preferred location is becoming one of Testlio's competitive advantages.?
"The freedom and flexibility we have experienced over the last two years is something I would not want to give up any time soon," Evert said.?
