Global to Local: Harnessing International Expertise

During a recent insightful chat with someone who's not only a Talent Acquisition leader but also shares my background in political science, I stumbled upon a truth that often gets overlooked in the realm of recruitment. Interestingly, my political science degree has equipped me with a deep understanding of the diverse backgrounds of many talented professionals in Canada. This insight has revealed a concerning trend where highly skilled and educated individuals are frequently turned away from roles that are significantly below their skill level, simply because they lack "Canadian work experience." This sort of rejection not only promotes underemployment but also reflects a deep misunderstanding of the global talent and achievement landscape.

The tendency of hiring managers to underestimate the quality and scope of international experience suggests a limited perspective, perhaps confined by their own experiences. There's a pervasive myth that professionals from other parts of the world hail from environments lacking in sophistication, technology, and innovation. This misconception could not be more inaccurate. The top source countries for immigrants to Canada are not only vibrant and rich in culture and opportunities but are also often at the forefront of technological and economic advancements.

Thanks for taking the time to compile this and sharing your thoughts on how to leverage this information. I don’t think enough recruiters and employers are aware of this information.

Is it really just the Canadian experience, or that the economy is a farce, or that we just wanna keep immigrants where we want them to be; doing the jobs no Canadian wants to do! Next 5 years is gonna be interesting to watch as newcomers, particularly young newcomers use Canada to springboard their careers to more serious destinations!

Thank you for highlighting this, there is a very large South African contingent that has also started growing, bringing with them a brew pot of highly skilled and culturally diverse workers that also struggle to get into the job market due to a lack of Canadian experience and their very tough and hard fought for qualifications either not being recognised or watered down by verifying institutes without concrete reasons as to why. Making it difficult for them to resume their careers.
