Employers See You As A Risky Hire When Changing Location (and what to do about it)

Why would employers see you as risky just because you're applying for an out-of-town job?

Most employers have had experience hiring candidates from outside their local area, so they've seen how it works.

And guess what? It doesn't always work so well. In fact, most companies experience greater risk that candidates who have to relocate don't last as long, compared to local candidates.

This usually doesn't mean that relocating candidates performed poorly on the job. Instead, it's often the family, who may not like housing, schools, churches, weather, or commute necessary to find affordable housing. Other reasons are missing their old location, friends, and family.

Good thing there are ways to mitigate and overcome this perceived risk:

  1. Prove That You're Worth It:?What's the best way to overcome employer perception of risk? Proving that you're worth it. The most effective way is to overwhelm employers with impact both in your resume and during interviews.
  2. Be Their Top Choice:?The most effective way to be an employer's top choice is to job search the way that 80% of new hires find jobs - They knew the hiring manager before the job was advertised, internally posted, before HR even knew about the opening. Unfortunately, most job seekers search for a job online and network after the job is advertised, internally posted, and communicated to HR. This results in a search method that's geared towards you coming in 4th place and hoping that the top candidates drop out, so you win by default.

Everyone can do this and so can you. But why do so few job seekers try to overcome risks this way?

No one taught them how ...
