Employer's Eyes: Key Skills in the World of BIM
Those who follow our social media channels may have noticed that we have recently been looking for new talents to join our team. Through an intensive recruitment process and numerous interviews with candidates, we have realised that it is important to share the focus for us as an employer with you.
We could consider our BIM services as a separate industry or specialisation within the construction industry. It's not just design, not just contracting, and not project management. It is a unique combination of all these areas, covering the full scope of the process from the tender stage through to the operational phase. By creating processes at the tender stage for the investor, we define them so that the intended effect is achieved when the facility is handed over.
So, what are the key skills for Frescon?
Software Knowledge
This is a key element. Our positions, such as #BIMModeler or #BIMSpecialist, mainly require working with different software. Although the leading role is with one supplier in our company, it is interesting to note that people who are familiar with several software engine solutions are better able to cope with programme development. Every year we want to increase the efficiency and quality of our services, and people who know several solutions can develop new software skills more efficiently.
Learning the programmes is not just about one course or using basic functions, but about developing advanced capabilities, and dealing with the problems of system solutions. We have been working in this sector for many years and know that #BIM is not just about simple solutions. It is also about experience and logical skills to solve model problems and system constraints.
Diverse Software
Familiarity with various types of software, not only model management software, but also clash management software, #IFCmodel viewers, and software overlays e.g. Diroots, web applications for data management, data exchange, working on a central model, or a QA/QC work system, are other elements that are important from our perspective. It is useful to know several solutions because each project determines different solutions.
Thanks to the current openness of the world and the possibility to work remotely, we carry out contracts in several countries located around the world and each investor has its specific requirements in terms of implementation and data management. Therefore, the ability to use different data management platforms is a huge plus.
Systematic Development
BIM is about continuous improvement. It requires constant upskilling as technology and software evolve. BIM is already a standard for many, but some universities don't even have model skill development on their agenda, so we think it's very important to develop yourself. Many of us are individuals who have reached our current level of 'initiation' through self-development, finding information, articles or YouTube videos.
Self-development, finding information and exploring the advanced capabilities of programmes a key parts of our approach. We attribute value to both experience and logical thinking in solving model-related problems.
Software Courses
While experience in the BIM area is sometimes difficult to come by, there is added value in having courses. We understand that there are still a relatively small number of companies using and implementing #BIMtechnologies, so it is hard to gain experience in this area.

Even if a candidate has no practice in BIM, documented courses indicate a willingness to develop skills in this area. This kind of information in your CV shows us that you want to develop this technology and, with our commitment, we will be able to work together to create the next realisation.
Remote Working
Frescon has been working remotely for years, which requires a specific approach to work. Our management works in several countries in Europe, so they had to make an effort from the early stages to have the team collaborate online. Therefore, we have people in our team working 100% remotely.
However, this also involves changing the way we work. Not everyone may be suited to working 100% remotely or working with a team that collaborates hybrid. The ability to collaborate effectively online, especially in hybrid teams, is key for us. Meetings in the Teams app are a daily occurrence for us, whether internally in teams or with our clients.
Knowledge of BIM Standards
Knowledge of current #BIMstandards is essential, especially with the increasing number of builders using these guidelines. Nowadays, more and more conscious investors are undertaking developments following current standards.
This way of working determines every participant in the process to work by the defined guidelines. If you want to progress in BIM, you need to know or be willing to learn such standards. An unwillingness to cooperate with BIM standards, or describing them as unnecessary, can make it difficult for us to work as a team, or with a client.
To sum up
We hope that the guidelines and criteria presented as a kind of 'roadmap' in the world of BIM will prove useful whether you dream of working in our team or a similar industry company. Awareness of the importance of these elements in today's working environment is widespread, so we wish you the best of luck in your pursuit of success, whatever your career choice!
May BIM be with you!
