EMPLOYER Performance Review: Why and how you should be EVALUATING YOUR EMPLOYER
When was the last time you evaluated your employer’s performance???
As an employee, you (hopefully) receive regular (more frequent than annual) performance reviews and/or feedback.?But employment relationships are a two-way street.?And just as you evaluated your employer during the job interview process, nothing prevents you from assessing your employer on a regular basis once on the job – say, every three or six months.??
Ok, don’t freak out!?The Employer Performance Review does NOT necessarily need to be shared with your employer, although you may want to use some of the newly gained insight during your ongoing feedback discussions.?The review is all about helping you.?
Below are three reasons a?formal?Employer Performance Review?is beneficial to you and your career:
1. It tells you whether your employer is meeting their promises – and your expectations
Your employer told you during the interview process how great they were to work for.?They reiterated this after you joined the organization.?How the company culture is one of a kind.?That they are strategic, innovative, employee-friendly, and team-oriented.?They said employees are offered challenging and meaningful work, and opportunities to develop new skills.?Your employer’s statements and promises likely influenced your decision to join and stay with the company.?An employer performance evaluation will highlight whether they are meeting their promises – and your expectations.?
2. It limits the impact of your short-term emotions
Creating and implementing a regular, formal review can decrease the chance that a bad day or experience will lead to a hasty career decision that you may regret, such as resigning. You are likely to make a more informed decision about your employment relationship if you base your evaluation on the performance over a longer period of time, instead of reacting to your short-term emotions.
3. It provides information you can use to make informed career decisions??
Evaluating the past performance, behaviors, and actions of your employer can help answer questions such as, “Is my employer’s performance meeting my standards/needs as an employee?” and “Is my employer’s behaviors and actions damaging its reputation – and by extension, mine?” and “Is this employment relationship still working for both parties?”?The information and insight you learn as a result of assessing your employer’s performance can help you make an informed decision about whether you should STAY or GO. ??

How to Evaluate Your Employer:
Self-reflection: Consider your own on-the-job experiences.? Reflect on what you are seeing, hearing, and feeling.
Informal Feedback: Talk to colleagues about their experiences.
?? By regularly reflecting on and evaluating your employer’s performance, behaviors, and actions, you can determine your satisfaction level with the employment relationship AND make informed decisions about your career.
Evaluating your employer is not about finding fault, but rather gaining a clear picture of the work environment you're in. This empowers you to have open conversations with your leader about your needs and advocate for yourself within the company. If your employer consistently falls short, it might be time to consider exploring new opportunities elsewhere.
