Employer Information Sources Determine If Your Resume Gets Through ATSs Or Gets Blocked

One of the underlying reasons your resume is blocked by Applicant Tracking Systems is the quality of the information you find about the employer.

And this is critical to examine, because almost all job seekers depend on inadequate employer information.

How many of these ineffective information employer information research sources do you depend on for your job search?

  1. Published Job Descriptions: Published job descriptions give you zero advantage over your competitors and they almost never reflect an individual hiring manager's current needs. HR wrote it (not the hiring manager), for a different purpose than helping you land interviews/jobs, and it was written over a year ago (Hint: Published job descriptions don't reflect most of the current search criteria).
  2. Employer Websites, LinkedIn Pages, Employer Financial Information: Employer websites and LinkedIn pages promote a company's wins, rather than their current problems. Financial statements look backwards, not forwards (you learned that in your first accounting class, remember?). If you customize your resume to reflect an employer's wins, you won't look like a fit (who needs to hire an expert at solving problems that are no longer problems?).
  3. Google: Google and other job boards enable employers to hide their problems, buried under hundreds of pages describing their wins. Small employers have a senior manager who manages what goes on the first pages of Google (the items that make them look good, like past wins) vs what gets buried (their problems). Large employers have entire departments who do this.

The good news is that there are more effective sources of employer information that can give you a big advantage over your competitors, because you'll be able to show hiring mangers that you understand their current key problems, and have solved similar ones.

But to gain this advantage, you first need to understand what their current problems are.
