Employees who feel valued deliver a valuable work
The moment you hit the office door make sure to keep your personal life away. Heard this phrase before? Well, I myself have heard it from my seniors at the workplace and have advised it to my juniors as well. However...there is something that seems to be incredibly off about this phrase.
Yes, while I do believe that individuals at the workplace should separate their personal and professional lives , the reality is some of them just can't and it's a problem we should address and resolve.
Addressing the problem is a nice step to begin with but solving the issue has to be tailored to an individual. We cannot approach everybody with the same formula to address and resolve their issues.
Here is what I feel one should approach a disturbed employee :
1. Privacy
If you’re asking an employee whether there is a problem then there are higher chances that the answer will be a no. Therefore, it is best to take the employee aside away from the office chores. A preferable option would be a conference room/ a place with no disturbances. This will ensure that the employee gets enough privacy to feel relaxed and pour the heart out .
2. Ask
Inform the employee the events that has led you to feel concerned and ask the employee to share the problem with you. At the same time ensure to keep their talk with you confidential to save the employee from embarrassment.

3.Resolve
Depending on the individual there can be many methods to resolve the concern, but it is important to ensure the employee that you are there to offer full support in your capacity throughout the process once the apt method to resolve the concern is decided.
4.Monitor
While it’s important to resolve the concern, it is even more important to monitor. Monitoring progress helps you understand that the process was right and is going in the right direction. You want to make sure that the issue is resolved from the root and not just from the surface level.
5.Control
While I understand the concern of helping individual/s in their tough time, it’s also important to control the behaviours of either the same or other individuals in the office. Employees will tend to find loophole in the office setting to gain sympathy and take a leave from their day to day tasks. Hence, behaviours of such level should be penalised to maintain the quality and integrity of the initiative to offer genuine help.
A helpful thought
I feel a successful evolution demands a positive change. A change that ensures respect and care for each employee. It is without a doubt that employees spend a major part of the day working in exchange for money, an essential element that puts food on the table and pays the bills, but money isn’t the only factor that would help them thrive for excellence.
A mentally disturbed individual doesn’t understand the language of money and is already in a path for its own destruction.
An excellent organisation not only helps employees see and work towards a career path but will also ensure that well-being of the employee is an important part of the organisation culture.

1 个月This is a thoughtful and well-expressed viewpoint. I fully agree that while separating personal and professional lives is ideal, it's not always practical. People are complex, and addressing emotional or mental concerns requires a personalized approach rather than a one-size-fits-all solution. A mentally distressed employee may not be motivated by monetary incentives, but genuine compassion and thoughtful engagement can yield positive outcomes for both the individual and the organization.
