Employees'? hidden intrinsic personalities matter!

Employees' hidden intrinsic personalities matter!

"Language betrays what the speaker or writer is truly feeling, even on a subconscious level, much like a Freudian slip betrays one’s real thoughts." - Knowledge at Wharton Staff.

According to Freud, unconscious mind fragments leak into conscious behaviors, prompting you to say something other than what you intended. These memory lapses and errors occur when suppressed (consciously pushed away) or repressed (buried without thinking) thoughts or desires resurface.

The words we write are an expression of our inner thoughts & personalities.?

Beyond the literal meaning of words, a text's style can reveal a wealth of unexpected insights into the thoughts of your employees.

Examples of this include the frequency with which particular words and word categories are used, regardless of context.

When people attempt to present themselves in a particular manner, they typically choose nouns and verbs that they believe to be appropriate, but they are unlikely to control their use of articles and pronouns.

These small words establish a text's style, which is more resistant to conscious manipulation.

Example: Vladimir Putin’s Recent Language Suggests War

Study by James W. Pennebaker, Ryan L. Boyd, and Ashwini Ashokkumar (February 20, 2022)

"I" is one of the most revealing words (and me, my, and mine). Self-reference (i.e., "I-words") frequently indicates sincerity and genuine openness with others.

In contrast, when attempting to conceal something or actively deceive others, individuals tend to use I-words at lower levels.

By examining the language Vladimir Putin uses during his press conferences, it might be possible to determine his intentions regarding Ukraine.

Since 2004, they have examined 21 press conferences and interviews that Putin has given, paying particular attention to those that have taken place since December 2021.

Putin’s use of I-words in meetings with the press.
Original content & data from: Wordwatchers Tracking the language of public figures

Putin's five most recent press conferences since January stand out in the graph, as can be seen.

In his most recent press conferences, he used fewer I-words—between 25 and 35 percent fewer than usual.

His use of risk-related words (threat, danger), as well as formal politeness (please, sorry, thank you) has nearly doubled in comparison to previous years, which is another indication of psychological distance.

It should be emphasized that changes in I-word usage can indicate a variety of things besides a plan to invade. Despite this, given how important his actions are, it's difficult to ignore this noticeable change in Putin's language.

Text-based Analytics in Human Resources

These are two important application from Text-based Analytics:

  1. The candidate’s natural workstyle - does this fit with your team's function?
  2. The candidate’s intrinsic values and motivations - are these in line with the company’s culture?

For example:

The use of candidates/employees infinitives or conjugated verbs is the indications of their natural working styles.

Where infinitives indicate more of process-oriented person, conjugated verbs indicate a goal-oriented person.

Why non-visible traits is relevant to Taoism?

We work with being, but non-being is what we use. (Tao Te Ching, 11)

“We join spokes together in a wheel, but it is the center hole that makes the wagon move.

We shape clay into a pot, but it is the emptiness inside that holds whatever we want.

We hammer wood for a house, but it is the inner space that makes it livable.

We work with being, but non-being is what we use.” -> "We work will human-being, but their non-being like skills, motivations, values, beliefs is what we really use"

In this verse, the dimension of “being” is meant as the visible. This material realm of being only matters to the extent that it allows us to use (or enjoy?) the non-material.

Everything we care most about is non-being—which can also be called invisible, non-matter, nothing, or spiritual.

The dimension of non-being—love, enjoyment, good health, comfort, inspiration, excitement, bliss, beauty—none of this is visible, yet we work with being only so that we may experience this. The value of something material depends entirely upon its relationship to the non-material.
