Employees' Happiness
Starts with
STRUCTURE

?

"Oh! You make employees happy? Your job is easy, just…

  • Pay them more!
  • Buy a table soccer and give them beers at the after work.
  • Give them less work, they are all lazy anyways!

…right? "

?

Well, no... If these were the key to happiness at work, would not companies worldwide be far better equipped to deal with the Great Resignation?

I work against this reductive perception of employees' happiness. "Employees only work for money" and "Employees are all dilettantes" are beliefs that need change. Just the way employees are perceived, so is the perception about employers. Employers are not just "evil, exploiting narcissists".

I want to change the way employees and employers are perceived. The relationships within the workforce, from front line to top-management, need not be conflictual.

?No, I do not make employees happy. It is not ME. But I do help companies put structures and processes in place that lead to employees' happiness.

Let us have a hard look at hard numbers: In 2015, only about half of employees “strongly agree”?that they understand what is expected of them at work, according to a Gallup study.

?Now let us imagine that you are one of these employees, and you do not know what is expected of you. It means that you do not have clear targets, or projects, or KPIs to work at. You do not have regular debrief with your management to give you a hint about your performance and your work. It means that the end goal is blurry and unclear. You have no direction whatsoever in your job. Try and play out this kind of situation in your current role and answer the following questions:

  • Would you agree that you could have a lack of direction? A sense of being lost?
  • How would you know if you can get promoted or demoted, not to mention evaluated in your work?
  • How would you link the efforts you do every day with the general efforts of the whole company?
  • How would you know what is expected of your colleagues or your boss?
  • Why would you bother and work so much?

As an employer, you do not want your employees to go round in circles with these questions too long. You want your employees to have access to the answers. You do not want your employees to feel lost, unsure or bothered too long. Your role is to make sure the above questions have little to no space (or quickly available answers) and the experience of your employees are seamless.

Simple structures and processes exist. A company can put them in place and give clear directions, goals, KPIs and clarity to their employees. Now THIS is one of the things we do when we work on employees' happiness.

Beers and table soccer… They'll come later!
