Employee Spotlight - Shannon Volland

Introduce yourself and describe your role at M.

My name is Shannon Volland and I am a member of the Wealth Solutions Commission Team. The Commission Team receives a variety of compensation to process, mainly derived from the sales of insurance and securities products as well as investment advisory or wealth management services. In 2023, the Commission Team received over one million transactions, and my primary responsibility is to ensure the accurate flow and payment of compensation in a timely manner. I also provide commission-based reporting to the Member Firms, administer complex compensation arrangements, ensure the accurate recording of incoming and outgoing cash amounts for M Holdings Securities, participate in external and internal audits, perform account reconciliations, prepare 1099 tax documents, and provide training for incoming team members.

The Member Firms and registered representatives are the Commission Team’s clients. Listening and providing knowledgeable assistance to their questions and concerns is an important part of my daily life at M. I believe that placing a high priority on understanding Member Firm business needs, identifying issues, and implementing effective business solutions while providing a high level of customer service facilitates strong working relationships and promotes the important feeling of working together as one team.

What accomplishment during your time at M are you most proud of?

My tenure with M has given me a strong frame of reference and background knowledge of our Member Firms, enabling me to navigate and resolve challenging situations effectively. Throughout the years, I’ve built strong personalized relationships with Member Firm principals, registered representatives, and back-office staff. I use this knowledge and my personal connections within the M Community on a nearly daily basis — while I may encounter similar situations, the personalities involved are different. This skill set helps me provide a satisfactory solution for all involved.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I enjoy the variety of people I come into contact with each day, and the fact that my days are frequently very fluid and ever-changing. I’d like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for my coworkers. There are so many people at M who are not only willing to help but will stop what they are doing in order to assist, and I cannot express my appreciation enough.
