Employee Spotlight Series: Jeff Rutter - EHS Manager

Employee Spotlight Series: Jeff Rutter - EHS Manager

What does your EHS role entail?

As an EHS Manager, my role focuses on two primary pillars – Compliance and Culture, or what I call the BIG C's. Cultivating a strong safety culture not only protects our workforce and community but also ensures everyone can enjoy life beyond work without injury. My responsibilities include mapping out structured safety measures, emphasizing prevention through leading indicators and taking a proactive approach to safety.

?

In honor of National Safety Month, why do you think workplace safety is so important, especially in a manufacturing setting??

Workplace safety is critical because it protects what matters most beyond the job – our families, hobbies and personal well-being. In manufacturing, where risks are inherent, staying vigilant is key to preventing accidents. At AWI, we prioritize safety in all our operations and meetings, which makes our commitment to prioritizing safety evident every day.?

?

Could you please list a few leading indicators for safety??

We use several types of leading indicators including Good Catches by our shop floor team members, which help identify and mitigate hazards. Additionally, our team conducts formal Risk Assessments to anticipate and minimize risks associated with tasks. We also prioritize Safety Conversations among staff to maintain ongoing safety awareness. Near Miss reports are another crucial leading indicator, helping us address potential issues before they escalate into injuries. These efforts are documented, tracked and shared monthly during our plant meetings.

How does AWI support your efforts in promoting workplace safety??

AWI starts each workday and meeting with a strong focus on safety. I feel lucky to work in an organization that strives to put safety above production. I know from experience that many companies don't have that priority with safety. In manufacturing, there's often pressure for shortcuts that can jeopardize quality, performance and safety. Our plant manager's commitment to safety empowers us to prioritize each other's well-being so we all take responsibility for safety.

?

Can you share a notable achievement or milestone related to safety that you're particularly proud of from your time at AWI?

The Johnstown plant has achieved over 700 consecutive days without any serious injuries – nearly two years of maintaining a safe workplace environment!

?

For someone aspiring to a career in EHS management, what advice would you give them based on your experiences??

I would advise anyone interested in EHS management to embrace both the analytical aspects of compliance and the creative opportunities within safety culture. Making workplace safety personal and engaging can transform policies into lasting commitments that extend well beyond the workplace.
