This month we are featuring our very own: Jim Rafferty
- What is your role at HY?
Project Manager
- What prompted you to start a career in electrical construction?
I started my career as an electrician back in 2001 when I joined the USCG, my main job was as an EM3 (Electricians Mate). I didn’t realize it was going to be my career at that point but that’s where it all started.
- How long have you been in the electrical field?
18 years.
- Tell us about your journey.
Like I said initially, it started back in 2001 while I was in the USCG. I got out of the CG in 2005 and got away from the trade for a while. I went to school, whilst holding down various jobs consisting of a landscaper, busboy, Chase Pitkin, telemarketer & bouncer. I then took a sales job for a few years before joining the electrical union in 06’.
- How long have you been with HY?
7 months
- What do you like most about your job?
The challenge and ever-changing atmosphere, it’s impossible to get bored when there are 1000 things flying at you every day.
- What do you like most about working here?
The people
- Why do you think customers do business with us?
The attention and focus on customer needs.
- How do you define success?
Being contempt. Just being happy with the way things are.
- What motivates you?
Challenge, I love being challenged and learning new things.
- What is your favorite past-time?
I used to love comics as a kid.
- What has been your favorite project at HY?
West Webster Fire Department!
- What is on your wish list for the next 10 years with HY?
I’d love to see the company grow and myself with it.
- What is your favorite line from any movie?
“We forgot Kevin!”
- If you had one meal to eat for the rest of your life what would it be?
BLT’s
- Who is your inspiration?
My Grandfather. He was a depression era survivor, farm boy at a young age, became an electrician, then started his own business and eventually became town judge. He valued family and hard work over everything.
- What makes you, you?
My wife, two boys, and my dogs. I think we are shaped by those we surround ourselves with and my family has molded me more than anything.
