Employee Spotlight

Denise is currently a bus driver with Dublin Bus, having joined the company in September 1985. She began her journey as a bus conductor and after three years began training to become a bus driver in the Driving Centre in Phibsboro Depot. Based in Summerhill Depot, Denise has been driving on the Skerries bus route for the past thirty-three years and loves her role.

What inspired Denise to work for Dublin Bus?

Denise shared, “The reason I applied to Dublin Bus was I wanted to follow in my families footsteps. My grandfather worked as a manager in Ringsend Depot and my uncle was a manager in Clontarf Depot – it was in the blood! It is a great company to work for, a secure and stable career.

Career before Dublin Bus

Denise said, “I came straight from school to work at Dublin Bus. l always wanted to be a driver and work in the transport sector, and I have never looked back”.

Enjoyable aspects of the job

Denise explained, “I have been driving the same bus route since l started as a driver. l know many of our customers and delight in the daily interaction with them. I don’t see it as a job – it’s like a vocation. l thoroughly enjoy every aspect of my role. It’s a rewarding experience; every day, l endeavour to be kind and helpful and take great pride in my work”.

She added, “l love Summerhill Depot; there is a great network of people. The team is fantastic, with good camaraderie and great support from the Inspectors, managers, and fellow drivers.

Proudest achievement:

Denise shared, ‘I remember a few years ago, one customer in particular at the stop in Skerries approached me in the cab, he was very worried and said he couldn’t move his leg. On the spot, l called Central Control to phone the emergency services, and an ambulance arrived soon after.

A few weeks had passed, and l was delighted to see the man getting my bus. He gratefully gifted me a box of chocolates and informed me he would have died if l hadn’t made the quick judgment call for medical assistance - as he had an undiagnosed blood disorder!?

I’m proud that l was able to assist the man and relieved to see him in good health.

Denise is also very proud that in 2014, after studying for three years, she successfully qualified as a physiotherapist. Additionally, over the course of two years, she became a civil celebrant. These qualifications are huge achievements for her while raising her daughters and working full-time. ?

Interests:

Denise has three amazing daughters, all in their twenties, whom she raised on her own, and she is very proud of them. She loves dogs and has three German Shepherds She enjoys the challenge of training them to be well-mannered family pets.
