Employee spotlight: Crisis management
The ability to manage a crisis (prevent, predict, react) is a crucial aspect for a business's long-term success and survival. The preventive approach (e.g., SWOT Analysis) is the best antidote against unexpected events that interfere with your plan. For sure, not all events are predictable and to be prepared for “the unknown” can be very expensive and inconvenient when not even possible but, you shall think of it when the sea is still calm.
?
Question 1: What can we do to mitigate the risk associated with a crisis?
?
First, a crisis is not necessarily a killer. To escape from a critical situation, you will probably need to renounce something but not all. Yes, to something but…to what? To respond to the question, you can study and build suitable tools. They will support your reaction, flexibly and effectively, in case of such a critical situation.
?
These tools (e.g., Pugh Matrix) will help you focus on the core of the issue, determining what is in scope and what’s not, guiding you to the best decision…but in the end, it’s on you and your team! It’s important to have consolidated plans, well-trained people, and clear and shared procedures. I believe in the importance of paying close attention to details during the development (e.g., Risks Matrix/FMEA).
?
This will possibly give you some more ways out in case a crisis knocks at the door of your project. Not even the support of a high-potential AI machine is beneficial for the purpose of preventing or escaping critical situations related to your business.
?
AI doesn’t know what is valuable for your project and for your company – it is Your business!
?
Question 2: Which is the most critical aspect of a crisis?
?
The true criticality of unexpected events often consists of the scarcity of information available at the time when you will need to make a potentially disruptive decision. For this reason, having frequent, easy, and transparent communication with all stakeholders of a project is a must, especially already when the crisis is not visible at all.
?
It’s again on you and the relations that you’ll be able to activate with Your Team!
?
Question 3: Which of the mentioned tools is a key factor to be able to prevent, predict, or react to a crisis?
?
As a best tool, I wish you to get the availability of the right person at the right time, coming from years of activities really carried out in the development of such complex business. He/She will bring a baggage of “non-templated” management and technical instruments, usually called Experience and Know-How. This is a not negligible plus and for sure a key factor for those organizations that want to be able to prevent and manage crises. In the end, we can take a breath, not everything in a critical situation is a bad thing! Every resolved crisis is a learning opportunity. It shall give us the stimulus to strengthen our strategies, our processes and can convince us that experienced and accountable people can count more than anything else... especially when your boat enters the storm.
