Employee Spotlight: Chi Tran

Employee Spotlight: Chi Tran

ReCode is developing the next generation of talent in genetic medicines. Here, one of our 2023 summer interns, Chi Tran discusses her internship experience, what attracted her to ReCode, and the support and insights she gained.

ReCode: Tell me about yourself - and what made you choose ReCode for your internship?

Chi Tran: I am from Palo Alto and have always been deeply fascinated by genetics. ReCode stood out to me not only because of its pioneering work in the field but also because of the incredible scientists on the team. Their reputation precedes them, and I wanted to be a part of such a dynamic environment.

ReCode: What was your role and what project(s) were you working on?

Chi Tran: I was a part of the bioanalytical team, where our primary focus was on optimizing protein detection assays and mRNA extraction techniques. It was a significant shift for me, transitioning from learning about these techniques in a classroom setting to actually applying them in real-world scenarios.?

The lab at ReCode is cutting-edge and follows protocols that are often more advanced than what's typically taught in academic settings.

ReCode: What’s the biggest lesson you have learned from your intern experience?

Chi Tran: Every task we undertake, no matter how big or small, holds immense importance. As an intern, it's easy to lose sight of this. But when I reflect on how my individual research contributes to the larger project, I truly begin to value my work and its impact.

ReCode: Which one of ReCode’s core values do you identify the most with and why?

Chi Tran: I deeply resonate with the value of "Act with urgency." I've always believed in efficiency, and I'm convinced that groundbreaking science doesn't emerge from a passive approach to work. It requires active, urgent and dedicated effort.

ReCode: How is ReCode supporting your career goals?

Chi Tran: ReCode has broadened my horizons. Before this internship, I had a limited exposure to the research component of the field. Now, I feel I've gained a more comprehensive understanding of this type of research, making me a more well-rounded person, employee and teammate.

ReCode: What about your internship was most surprising to you and what lesson(s) can you draw from it?

Chi Tran: I was surprised by the immense trust and value ReCode places in its interns. The autonomy I was granted not only allowed me to take ownership of my work but also significantly boosted my confidence.

ReCode: Can you share a memorable moment or interaction you had during your internship that had a significant impact on you?

Chi Tran: A standout moment for me was our meeting with the CEO. Shehnaaz is an inspiration, especially for women in STEM. Her journey and achievements make me aspire to reach similar heights in my career.

ReCode: What, if any, attitudes or beliefs changed for you as a result of your service?

Chi Tran: I've always heard the phrase "slow and steady wins the race," but it was at ReCode that I truly understood it. The industry is incredibly fast-paced and competitive, but I've learned that it's crucial not to rush and compromise the integrity of experiments.

ReCode: What knowledge and skills did you gain? How will you apply them in the future?

Chi Tran: Apart from the invaluable technical skills and unique lab experiences, ReCode also arranged an intern poster session. This allowed us to showcase our research, a skill that will undoubtedly benefit me in future presentations and discussions.

ReCode: What are your plans after graduation?

Chi Tran: I'm looking forward to pursuing a Masters in Genetic Counseling. I'm interested in the opportunity to assist patients and guide them through the intricate world of genetics.

ReCode: Any advice for future ReCode interns?

Chi Tran: I'd strongly recommend making the most of the learning opportunities here. Stay curious, ask questions and immerse yourself in the diverse backgrounds of the team.?

A special shout out to Krystle Okialda-Chase — the career learning session she coordinated for interns was an eye-opener, introducing us to various career paths we hadn't considered before.
