Keith McGann Dublin Bus

Employee Spotlight

Keith is currently a bus driver with Dublin Bus. He joined the company in 2007 and began training to become a bus driver in the Driving Centre in Phibsboro Depot. He started as a driver based in the Harristown Depot and then transferred to Phibsboro Depot. Keith has been driving on Route 9 for the past three and a half years, and he thoroughly enjoys it.

What inspired Keith to work for Dublin Bus

Keith shared, “The reason I applied for Dublin Bus was I wanted to follow in my father and grandfather’s footsteps and be the third generation of McGann’s working in Dublin Bus. When l was a child, l loved listening to my dad recount stories about his day driving and all the people he met. I remember when I started in the company there were a lot of drivers who worked with my dad and grandfather, which meant a lot to me. My grandfather really encouraged my dad and his brothers to work in the transport industry. I have two uncles who are employed by Bus éireann, one as a mechanic at the Broadstone Depot and the other as a driver on the Luas.

I’m very proud to be working as a bus driver – keeping the family name firmly in the public transport sector”!

Career before Dublin Bus

Keith shared, “Before my career at Dublin Bus, I worked for the OKR Group, which owned the Burger King franchise, from 1996 until 2007. After one year on the job, l was promoted to the position of manager for their Tallaght and Nutgrove stores. It was a great experience, worked with amazing people. I made friends for life. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the job was training new employees and encouraging them to perform to the best of their ability. I really enjoy working with people.? It was a very rewarding experience, and a lot of the skills I gained during this time have proven to be transferable and valuable in my role as a bus driver.

Enjoyable aspects of the job

Keith explained, “I love the interaction with customers. I always have a smile and greet everyone who boards the bus. These small interactions with customers can have a positive impact on their day, and it’s a rewarding experience as a bus driver to be kind and helpful”. He went on to mention that “the team at Phibsboro Depot is great/ They’re really encouraging and supportive across all functions, from clerical employees to maintenance and everyone in between. Everyone makes you feel comfortable and part of the team.

Keith also mentioned his involvement in the Phibsboro G.P.A committee, saying, “I’ve been on the committee for the last number of years and am responsible for organising the children’s Christmas party, which l enjoy every year”.

Proudest achievement

Keith admitted, “It’s hard to pinpoint just one achievement because I have plenty to mention. But one of my most recent accomplishments is that l started running and completed a 10km race. Taking up running has been a transformative experience for me. I now run daily, and it not only makes me feel great but also greatly benefits my health and wellbeing”.

Interests

Keith has four amazing children of whom he is incredibly proud. He also has a new partner, Martina, who is very supportive and encouraging in so many ways. Keith is big sports fan and follows Arsenal. In his spare time, he plays football on Friday nights with fellow bus drivers from the Phibsboro Depot. If that’s not enough, he’s also working on getting back playing Gaelic football with a local Dad’s and Lads team.
