Employee Spotlight: Bill Nicholson
Q: Can you share the key milestones in your career journey that led you to your current position as Vice President of Capital Investment Companies and Director of Capital Insurance Affiliates?
A: I began my career in a family business focused on estate planning and insurance for clients about thirty years ago. At that time, I frequently collaborated with clients of Capital Investment Group (CIG), which offered only brokerage services. During a social event, I asked Richard why CIG didn't have someone managing insurance. He replied, "the right person hasn’t come along." The next morning, we met at Finches, an old diner, and sketched out a deal on a napkin. That was the start of our journey together.
I started offering estate planning services to Capital's brokers and moved my office into Capital. Richard suggested we offer variable annuities, and soon we expanded into life insurance and other insurance services. Over the years, our insurance division has grown to contribute significantly to Capital's bottom line, making it a successful partnership.
Q: You've been in the financial services industry since 1988. What are the most significant changes you've witnessed, and how have they impacted your approach to business and estate planning?
A: When I joined Capital, we had fewer than 25 brokers. Since then, we've grown significantly. Initially, variable annuities were very basic, but now some insurance companies offer guaranteed income products, guaranteed death benefits, and products designed to hedge against the market. The variety of products available to our representatives has increased, allowing us to better serve our clients.
Q: In your experience, what are the biggest challenges in your role, and how do you address them?
A: One of the biggest challenges is ensuring we have the right people and are fully staffed. We have six cross-trained team members to ensure efficiency and responsiveness to our brokers' needs. We emphasize timely service and teamwork, with everyone ready to step in when needed. It's crucial that we work harmoniously and reward each other equally.

Q: Conversely, what are the most rewarding aspects of your job?
A: We have quarterly lunch meetings where we catch up on each other's personal lives, fostering a sense of family. It's incredibly rewarding to work in unison with a happy and cohesive team.
Q: Can you share one of your most memorable experiences at Capital Investment Companies or in your role with Capital Insurance Affiliates?
A: The camaraderie at Capital is something I deeply value. Richard and I have been best friends for thirty years, and we still enjoy spending time together outside of work. It feels like working with friends every day rather than just going to a job. This sense of friendship and shared love is immensely rewarding and makes retirement seem unnecessary.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to share about your journey, your current role, or your vision for the future of Capital Investment Companies?
A: I foresee the industry focusing more on money management and an increase in RIA focus over the next ten years. There could be significant changes for the better, with fewer brokers taking upfront commissions and more working off percentage fees.
The future looks bright for Capital Investment Companies.
