Employee Health & Motivation - Are we doing enough

I regularly meet senior leaders and managers from large companies during my consultation who go for knowledge and leadership programs and trips which make them better and more knowledgeable team leaders. While these may be good initiatives by corporate HR Teams, I don’t see a similar effort on health front from leading corporates, to improve employee health. They may become better leaders, but are really poor health wise, both physical and mental.
What are we as leading corporates doing about larger employee health. Are we just providing them good insurance, some external speakers coming and doing some on site talk or tests, or discounted health tests with some service providers or a great canteen or food vouchers or gym memberships etc etc .
Guess not enough and more can and should be done
I see clients who are employees of large corporations who have
1. Not done annual health check-ups for 2-3 years.
2. Don’t understand their medical reports
3. Unaware about their cholesterol levels and its impact on them.
4. Obese managers with diabetes, hypertension, acidity, osteoporosis etc etc .
5. No time for exercise or can’t even bend. Have severe back and neck issues. Walking for 1-2 kms is a big task.
6. Irregular periods for female employees or high mineral or vitamin deficiency
7. Don’t get sound sleep.
8. Can’t start a family due to work pressures.
Real issues which I think corporate or Senior HR Leaders need to address as employee well being leads to superior performance and better engagement & happier employee. When I countered some of the clients (Business leaders and HR Managers) who come to me about these questions, they seem to believe that its individual employee choice as to how they manage their health.
My take on these issues is that when a employee spends 8-12 hours working for you, gives 50-60 % of working lifetime to the company, it’s time for companies to take a more holistic approach to better employee health and motivation.
I am happy that I penned my thoughts through this article and I sincerely believe there is a lot to be done in this space of corporate wellness by senior leadership of companies.

5 年Great article! Health is more then just the numbers and having a positive role model in the leadership role makes all the difference. My first supervisor showed me the importance of finding balance and since then it has been a challenge to find another one as committed to really having work/life balance.
