Well-Being at Work

Picture this: you, a stressed-out worker, leave the office and head to your annual doctor’s appointment. After a quick checkup, you rush right back to the office. The diagnosis??

You’re neglecting your exercise, nutrition, and overall well-being because of the juggling act that is being an employee, a parent, and–well, whatever else you are.?

If your appointment was with Dr. Richard Safeer, he’d tell you about ways to focus on health within the workplace. At our July virtual conference, he shared similar advice with attendees in a fireside chat titled, “Why Corporate Culture Is the Solution for Employee Well-Being and Performance.”?

In his book, A Cure for the Common Company, Dr. Safeer offers a blueprint for creating a culture of health at your organization. Here are some takeaways he shared with our audience:?

You need to ‘plan for success.’

This might seem obvious. But Safeer uses this phrase as an acronym to denote six building blocks of employee well-being, including: peer support, leadership engagement, norms, social climate, culture connection points, and shared values.?

If you’re a leader, promote wellness.?

This means consistently embodying a culture of well-being through your everyday actions. Are you taking breaks, asking your colleagues to go for walks, and refraining from sending late-night emails? You should be, according to Safeer.?

“I think that most leaders don’t fully appreciate the impact that each of us has on the health and well-being of those we lead, whether it’s the immediate direct reports, or the entire part of our organization that we influence,” Safeer said.

Belonging Is Broken

Does your organization have a healthy culture of belonging? If it does, you might be seeing results like high performance and engagement, psychological safety, and authenticity.?

We recently hosted some leaders from Talking Talent in a webinar on this very subject. Interested in hearing more? Watch the recording here and share with colleagues.
