Employee Engagement

A simple compliment can have such a profound impact on someone's morale.

Recently, a close friend unexpectedly told me that I was resilient, and it struck a chord. Now maybe I'm resilient, and maybe I’m not. I’ve never really thought of myself that way, but I was surprised by how good this off-hand remark made me feel, and how long that feeling stayed with me. ?

It got me thinking about the fundamental principles behind fostering employee engagement.

In my experience, there are two core elements that are crucial for keeping teams engaged:

  1. A Sense of Purpose: Individuals thrive when they feel they are part of something greater than themselves. Everyone needs to have a sense of belonging. Whether it's contributing to a groundbreaking project at work or being part of a tight-knit community outside the office, the desire to belong is universal.
  2. Recognition and Value: Yet, it's equally important for individuals to feel valued for their unique contributions from someone they respect and admire. Beyond acknowledging their achievements, recognizing their distinct qualities like resilience or dedication fosters a deeper sense of loyalty and commitment.

What are your thoughts on fostering employee engagement? I'd love to hear your real world examples of things that worked to increase employee loyalty as well as efforts that fell flat.

'A simple compliment can have such a profound impact on someone's morale.' Never a truer word was spoken! We're obviously all different, but I don't know ANYONE who doesn't like a compliment or praise for their hard work. It takes so little effort, and zero extra cost, but can have the biggest impact.
