Employee Asset Investment

“Employees who believe that management is concerned about them as a whole person – not just an employee - are more productive, more satisfied, more fulfilled. Satisfied employees mean satisfied customers, which leads to profitability.”- Anne M. Mulcahy/former chairperson and CEO of Xerox Corporation. 

These words rang true as I recently conducted a Personal Preservation Course for a group of employees at a fortune 500 company. This was the first time I had taught this course for a corporate group of employees. When I was approached by this company to teach this course, I have to admit, I was pretty impressed. Among other things, I was specifically impressed that a company of this size would:

1. Recognize every employee as a security asset
2. Care about the employees enough to provide them a venue to become more security minded, both at work and in their personal lives.

Before I get into the heart of this post let me first describe this course so as to provide a better understanding. The Personal Preservation Course provided by my company, Core Security Consulting LLC, is a fairly comprehensive course. This course provides an introduction to:

Principles of criminal behavior            Situational awareness

Reading behavioral indicators               Terrorist planning methodology

Mental mindset                                      Principle based defensive tactics

This company had figured out what many still have not, employees are an investment opportunity. Investing in employees can show great returns. These employees were being trained in things not conventionally taught in the corporate world except, possibly, for those in the security field. This company wanted to provide this training to their employees to provide them the ability to protect themselves against harm. The participants in this course were some of the most attentive and “thirsty” people I have ever trained. Naturally, this observation made me curious enough to ask them why. Well I eventually asked some of the participants what they enjoyed most about the course and why. The predominant answer was not the typical responses I get such as “I really enjoyed the situational awareness part” or “I liked the striking and physical tactics part”. No, the answer I received from the majority was “I really appreciated the fact I could get this kind of training at work!” Imagine that….a company that valued them as a whole person – not just an employee. I could be wrong, but I’m guessing this company just made some more “company” employees.
