Employability Training

Employability Training

Education... what is it??

Our education today is very good in creating well read individuals that might have some or no practical experience.?There are of course, exceptions as we speak.?But, is that a norm or and exception.?We would like to look at norms and?possibly look at ways making changes at grass root levels.?

Changes at grass root levels, typically start out good but wither out over a period of time and scale.?They suffer quality and retention of knowledge.?So, is this something we can attempt to solve.?I believe so...?

Are we employment ready, coming out of education??

Employment ready... what is that.?Day one graduates from college, can he be a billable resource for a commercial organization (IT Services industry language).?If they answer is "yes"... then person is "employment ready".??

But, we all know that is not the answer we get today from most of employers.?But, why not...?Why is our education far from employment.?Are we being purists and look at the world of learning and application of knowledge as two separate traits.?If so, is this the right approach.??

What is industry looking for??

Based on my limited 30 years of hiring across industries and geographies, my opinion is as follows, when it comes to what is industry looking for?

- Generic behavioural traits / professionalism (good human values)?

- Technical hands-on knowledge and ability to learn quickly?

- Soft skills specific to job title?

Looking at the list, we realize quickly, our current model of education is not equipping job seekers for any of these in any degree of completeness.?Yes, on paper,?I am sure it is very different.?But some of us that had opportunity to work with best of the institutions on campus hiring, we know the lowest level of expectations that most fail on.?

How do we get there??

Get the candidates ready... easy said than done.?But, not impossible.?

Think different... learn from failures... our education focus on "Teaching".... to me, this is possibly the most negative approach.?We all know the products of this system and how not effective at all.?

So what could be done... Stop teaching... "help / facilitate learning".?Do not teach... is the mantra.?This happens to me my pet subject, so I would not want to bore you guys with some couple 100 pages of intro into this subject... lol ;)?

Scaling education with quality...?

Once we understand concept of "help / facilitate learning" model.?We should break learning as?

  • Help learn the concepts (not teach)?
  • Help apply the knowledge (hands-on)?
  • Help spread the knowledge to emphasise learning (discussions, workshops, brown bag lunch?etc..)?

To do all these there is enough technology available in open source...?eLearning / LMS (Learning Management Systems) are some of the tools one could use to help facilitate learning in their own steady pace, monitored by professional facilitators.?
