Empirical process

Empirical means "pertaining to, derived from, or testable by observation." An empirical approach to engineering is behind the Agile approach to software development and behind everything that we do in digital service development. Empirical process has three crucial components: inspection, transparency and adaptation.

What this means for us, when we're developing a service is that we:

• Look at the world (inspection) we talk to users and try to understand their world view. If there is an existing service to be replaced, we map it and understand what it does and its pain points.
• We let others know what we find (transparency), in show and tells and other meetings we communicate what we've seen and heard.
• We change what we do in light of what we see (adaptation). We make what we see and hear, from our users, from our stakeholders, our guide to what we do.

The benefit of this approach is that what we build is closely aligned with users and as we progress we gain a better and better understanding of the problem that we're solving.
