Emphasizing Safety Over Autonomy: Insights from AAA’s Latest Survey on Self-Driving Vehicles with expert Greg Brannon
In a world where advancements in vehicle technology are constantly evolving, AAA finds that drivers overwhelmingly prioritize enhancements in current vehicle safety systems over the development of self-driving technology.??
“Most drivers want automakers to focus on advanced safety technology. Though opinions on fully self-driving cars vary, it's evident that today's drivers value features that enhance their safety,” said Greg Brannon, AAA’s automotive engineering director. Indeed, the survey shows that 78% of drivers prioritize advancements in safety systems, while a mere 13% view the development of autonomous vehicles as important—a decline from 18% in previous years.?
Interestingly, awareness surrounding Robotaxis, the self-driving taxis populating a few major cities, is considerable—with 74% of drivers having some familiarity with them. Nevertheless, 53% of respondents indicate they would not opt to ride in one. There could be a gap between knowledge and comfort, especially among different demographics; while Millennials and Generation X express more willingness to try Robotaxis, Baby Boomers remain largely resistant.?
“While the push towards self-driving vehicles continues, the priority remains firmly in improving existing safety features. Transparency regarding ADAS capabilities, thorough testing, and clear consumer education will be important in addressing concerns and enhancing trust. We are committed to collaborating with industry leaders and automakers to prioritize the safety and performance of advanced vehicle technology,” said Brannon.??
