Empathy! Soft Skill or Critical Tool?

Empathy! Soft Skill or Critical Tool?

Why is it so tough to grasp the importance of empathy in the workplace? Are we too scattered, self-centered, scared?

Research substantiates the fact that our people will leave us if we don’t “get them.” To retain that talent, we better work the soft skill of empathy into our business strategy.

Start by listening instead of talking, respecting instead of ignoring, valuing truth instead of assuming the facts. Also, invest in those around us and love our people for all they have to offer. Align your culture with the old adage, “Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes.”

Let’s embrace a greater sense of the Employees Point Of View. If it is different, great. We need more ideas and varied perspectives, not fewer. Ask what people around us need to be amazing as employees and colleagues. This is about love, compassion, honesty and respect just as much as it is about flexible workplace and schedules.

In 1630 before landing in Salem Harbor, John Winthrop, the first Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, said:

“We must delight in each other, make others’ conditions our own, rejoice together, mourn together, labor and suffer together, always having before our eyes, our community as members of the same body.”

Empathy. You want it, they want it, we all want it!
