Empathy Beyond Borders: Jyl’s Dedication to Spark Change in the Global Community
Meet Jyl, a youth with a big heart for the global community beyond Singapore. As a volunteer with Youth Corps Singapore Beyond Singapore Cluster, she advocates for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG) through events that encourage Youths to contribute to social causes beyond Singapore’s borders.
Although she considers herself an ‘average individual’, her unwavering dedication in giving back to the community through volunteering with Youth Corps Beyond Singapore Cluster reveals a big heart to serve. She quotes Mother Teresa, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”.
Beyond Singapore Cluster provides opportunities for youth to learn, engage in and contribute to social causes beyond Singapore – a focus that resonates with Jyl, who is originally from the Philippines before calling Singapore home.
“The cause is very special to me. Seeing the social conditions in the Philippines when I visited from time to time, I’m thankful for the life here. This is why I want to be a part of a community that can help elevate the less privileged and vulnerable whether locally or outside our borders.”
Jyl hopes that the small things she does with great love will play a part in creating awareness for social issues and give a voice to those who did not have the opportunity to speak up for themselves. She aims to pursue social work as a career in the near future; working on the ground to understand social gaps, identifying resources and collaborations that can be harnessed to solve pressing issues.
“Volunteering has broadened my horizon and reminded me of the importance of compassion and resilience. It also provided me with the opportunity to pick up valuable skills such as event planning, professional communication and people management. This journey has truly shaped the way I want to live my life.”
