The Empathy of Ash Wednesday

The Empathy of Ash Wednesday

The Lenten season starts today—Ash Wednesday. It will end on Easter Sunday and is a time of spiritual reflection and renewal for Christians around the world. I grew up in a Missionary Baptist Church where I do not recall the observation of Lent to have great significance. It wasn't until one Ash Wednesday in undergrad when I tried to wipe the ashes off of my girlfriend's head did I learn how reverent the season is for some. In the last decade, I have been more serious about the the observation. While the primary focus of Lent is on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, there is certainly a connection between the Lenten season and empathy.

EMPATHY AND LENT

Empathy, which is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, is an essential aspect of Christian spirituality. During Lent, Christians are called to reflect on their own lives and to examine their relationship with God and with their fellow human beings. This process of self-reflection and examination can help to cultivate empathy, as individuals become more aware of the challenges and struggles faced by others. It is unconscionable to go into Lent with spirit of willful ignorance and insensitivity to the plight of other people.

Moreover, the practice of fasting during Lent can also help to cultivate empathy. By voluntarily giving up certain luxuries or indulgences, individuals can develop a deeper appreciation for the difficulties faced by those who lack basic necessities or who are in poverty. This can help to inspire greater compassion and empathy towards those who are less fortunate. When we live in abundance and excess, we have the propensity to ignore the needs of others. Lent is a time for us to personally unpack those tendencies by trying to walk in the shoes of another.

While the primary focus of Lent is on spiritual reflection and renewal, there is certainly a connection between the Lenten season and empathy. By reflecting on our own lives, examining our relationships, and practicing self-denial, we can cultivate greater empathy and compassion for others.

We must work to create greater empathy and compassion for others. If not, what's the purpose?
