Emotions in public speaking

You generate emotion.

What matters most is not how you feel when you speak but how you make your audience feel.

A quick way to achieve this is to ask yourself “What’s my objective?”

With this question comes your plan of action in how you want to make your audience feel.

Do you want to persuade, encourage, inspire, challenge?

Just ensure you always avoid “Inform” - a shortcut to boring talks.

It's crucial to understand the emotions underlying your message to speak with emotion. Reflect on the feelings you want to evoke in your audience and connect with them authentically. Use personal anecdotes or storytelling techniques to convey emotions effectively.

For instance, when delivering a speech on leadership communication, I tap into my genuine passion for the subject to convey a sense of urgency and empathy to the audience.

Practice using vocal variety to convey emotion and authority in your speech. Experiment with pitch, tone, volume, and pace to emphasize key points and evoke different emotions. Use pauses strategically to build suspense or allow ideas to sink in.
