You can't grow and develop if you're haunted by painful memories. What are our options for overcoming this destructive mental programming? It is difficult to move on from painful experiences that are buried in our subconscious and have an impact on our lives. In order to realize our dreams, how do we change and grow ourselves?
The first step is to free yourself from the past's shackles. Find out what's keeping you from moving forward, and then either get rid of it or use it to your advantage. Identify the memories that are preventing you from living your life to the fullest. Have you been hurt by someone? It's time to put the past behind you and move on. Do you think you were unfairly punished? It's done. It's all done and dusted.?
The following are a few of the more common emotions that tend to bury themselves deep within our minds and limit our personal development:
- Anger : A natural reaction to a perceived attack or injury is to become enraged. There is an increase in the flow of energy because of it. However, if left unchecked, it robs you of the energy you need to improve your life. Holding onto your rage for more than a week is counterproductive. Let go of your attachments. Throw it away in your mind's eye. Calm your thoughts. Turn your rage into a source of inspiration. Be angry, but also motivated.
- Revenge: Anger's first cousin. It depletes your stamina over time. Your attacker has likely moved on with their life, and you should, too. You don't want the injury to hurt you any more than it already has. Either lose it or use it. Instead of saying, “I’ll get them,” say, “I’ll show them. I’ll be somebody!”
- Sadness: This is the most incapacitating emotion, as it saps your will to continue right from the start. Most likely, you'll have to wait for it to finish dripping on its own. If the sadness persists despite the passage of time, try consciously squeezing it out. Laughter and a positive outlook on life are the best medicine. Feeling down will not change anything, so don't worry about it. As a human being, you are entitled to a peaceful mind.
- Resentment: Because life isn't always fair, there is resentment. Holding on to resentment is not a strategy to fight back, and it is unrealistic to believe otherwise. Put it away and return to the fray.
- Guilt: It's yet another emotion that stands in your way of achieving your goals and aspirations. We've all done things we'd rather forget. Things we'd do differently if we could go back in time. Many of us are paralyzed by our own shame and unable to move on. Refrain from allowing others to put you in a bad mood. When someone tries to put you on the defensive, remind yourself, "No matter what you do or say to me, I am still a worthwhile person.'"
- Envy: A person's desire for another's possessions, status, abilities, or situation can be defined as envy. The moment we begin to feel envious of others who appear to have more than we do, we begin to doubt our own abilities. Unless we face this feeling head on, it will take over our lives if we don't recognize it and resist it.
You can no longer be affected by painful memories if you reframe them and remove their roots from your subconscious. There are a few techniques that can assist you in reinterpreting the past: Instead of being angry, work on improving yourself. Make an effort to find a place where you can unwind. Relax and take a break. In the past, you may have been let down or hurt by someone or something. Try to separate yourself from the feeling as well as from the situation. Take a look at what's going on. How long did it take you to get over those emotions? Were they a source of motivation for you? How can you use your past memories to your advantage rather than rely on them? Inflicting additional pain on yourself is a waste of time.
