Emotions from other people can feel overwhelming!
Highly sensitive people have the tendency to please others, because our brain is literally programmed to consider social context a lot more than is the case for non-HSP.?
This means that our focus lies very often on external factors. Add our strongly activated mirror neurons to that, and we are like a sponge, taking everything in!?
It’s like my client Kate told me the other day:
‘Yesterday evening my husband came back from a business trip, and he was feeling frustrated. Traveling can be overstimulating for him, and then he gets annoyed when he comes home.
I was already feeling a bit tired from a long day at work, and I just couldn’t deal with his comments. It’s like I took his words in, amplified them internally, and was shooting them back out at him. This made the bomb burst, ending up in an evening of discussion and conflict, instead of enjoying each other’s company.’

When our attention is focused too much on your external world, these kinds of situations will occur more often than you would probably like them to. The key to solving this is simple and easy:
Bring your attention to your breathing. Take a few slow breaths in and out through your nose and deep into your stomach. This way, instead of losing yourself in a useless fight, you get to slow down a minute and come to your senses.?
Doing this helps your survival brain to relax, and you can feel calm and centered again. Reactions can now come forth from your rational brain, where you can give the other person the space to get it out of their system (because most of the time it isn’t personal towards you), the mood can calm, and you can enjoy the rest of your time together without anyway who has to feel dejected.
