Feelings are a part of human beings and have an impact on their perception, behaviour, and health. Yoga philosophy classifies emotions not merely as momentary sensations, but as vibrations that affect the gross, subtle, and causal bodies. Therefore, realising emotions as energy and being able to manage this energy through practice of yoga ideally work for increased recognition of what a person is going through emotionally.1.
Emotions as Energy in Yoga Philosophy:
According to the context of yoga philosophy, emotions are said to be related to what has to do with ‘prana,’ which is the force of life energy. Emotions are approached as strong streams of energy that circulate within a person’s body and influence the state of chakras and vital energy. When the emotions are negative and the person can not let them out freely or does not have any emotions at all, the prana can get blocked and this causes different kinds of problems in the physical and emotional level. The cognition of the emotions as energy allows us to pay our attention to the integration of the emotional, physical, and energy bodies.
Channelling Emotional Energy Through Yoga Practices:
Yoga has several forms of practice that assist in dealing with and working through the energy we create with emotions. By enhanced breathing techniques (pranayama), postures (asanas) and meditation the consciousness of feeling and its manifestations in the physical body can be enhanced. Thus, emotions can get stuck and be released in the body through specific yoga asanas. For example, while doing the heart-opening poses one is likely to release sadness and grief or while doing the grounding poses one is able to discharge anxiety or restlessness. This process of moving and breathing on the mat is very much about directing one’s energy positively when feeling upset.

Practising yoga in our everyday existence will help us increase our empathy, stress tolerance, and overall well-being. Thus, during the yoga practice, one learns how to manage their feelings without any prejudice and treat them kindly. By gaining a better understanding of our behaviour and being able to manage ourselves better, one can find inner happiness and psychological well-being. The yoga practice presented here helps to realize that energy is there inside us, as well as to understand that negative emotions can be turned into positive ones and the energy of the negative emotions can be released more constructively. Yoga is not only the Asana's, the practice on and off the mat makes the difference in cultivating habits and discipline. The inner discipline is created, and a natural "pause" becomes a habit of the mind. Which not only helps us to respond effectively but also choose our best responses to all the external stimulus.

Mastery of one’s emotional self is crucial for an individual in order to attain a balanced and unified self and feel more in touch with who they really are. Yoga, thus, aids in improving the quality of one’s mind, heart and soul to handle different aspects of life in a much balanced and composed manner.

Emotion is not simply a temporary state of mind but a constructive force that pervades every level and phase of existence. If people accept emotions as energy and introduce yoga into their lifestyle, it is possible to influence this energy and make changes for the better. It is possible to achieve emotional intelligence, stability, and inner harmony by learning self-awareness, self-control, and following the principles of mindfulness. Yoga is one of the richest ways to comprehend and interact with our emotional energy, which leads us through the path of self-realization and self-empowerment.
