What traits make a good leader??

I asked you all this same question a few weeks ago and received hundreds of responses and varied inputs. The overwhelming majority of responses were traits of emotional intelligence.?

Emotional intelligence requires leaders to have heightened skills of empathy, understanding, social awareness, and self-regulation.?

Why should you lead with emotional intelligence??

Leading with emotional intelligence helps to close the gap between employee and executive. It supports a company culture where employees feel connected and like they belong. Emotionally intelligent leadership opens a channel of open communication and feedback with your team members and other leaders around you. It makes employees feel comfortable challenging traditional roles which in turn drives innovation and cooperation.

At the root of emotional intelligence is empathy. I talk a lot about empathy, but why is it important in a leadership position?

When we lead with an empathetic mindset, we become more approachable. Empathy teaches us to be active listeners, which helps us to notice signs of employee stressors like burnout and disengagement. We become part of the conversion because our team feels comfortable communicating their thoughts and feelings.?

It’s important for employees to feel like they can approach their leaders. When this trust is built, we have the opportunity to be proactive instead of reactive.?

Investing in emotionally intelligent leadership is good business. Employees will feel more comfortable in their workplaces which enhances engagement, retention, cooperation and innovation.?

How is your organization promoting emotionally intelligent leadership??

Thank you for sharing these pertinent thoughts on this relevant and timely topic. I believe in leaders, not only organising workshops and seminars for their workers, but going the extra mile to be an emotional intelligent leader by design. Coworkers soon catch on and adopt little practices in the workplace making it a place where people want to come to work.

Listening and creating a space for both parties to speak without judgment. People want to be heard and seen for who they are. Reminders are sometimes necessary. We are presented with challenges and opportunities everyday. Like any relationship, it's work, and when a break down in communication occurs, how we recover is important to get back on track. Emotionally intelligent leadership? It comes from the attitude of the leader first of all who is a living example. There are no methods other than.... listening and empathy, delegation, support in case of mistakes and reward in case of success. She/He must cascade it, be able to accept sometimes that she/he does not have all the answers, create opportunities for confrontation. No tool can help you, only awareness of your soft skills, if emotional intelligence is among them you can strengthen it, if it is among your characteristics: you are not a good manager.
