In my 30 years as a sales coach and trainer, one of the most significant mistakes I've seen salespeople make is concentrating solely on logical factors like product specifications, pricing, and ROI while neglecting the emotional drivers behind a buyer's purchasing decision—fear of risk, peer approval, fear of failure, and personal gain.
While logical justifications are essential for purchases, the initial motivation that drives a purchasing decision is often emotional.
Emotional-based questions help reveal the personal stakes involved in a purchasing decision. For instance, asking, "What are your main concerns about this project?" lets the sales rep understand and address underlying anxieties directly. Another example, "How will this solution impact your team's day-to-day work?" delves into the personal and operational benefits or drawbacks from the buyer's perspective. These insights are invaluable for tailoring the proposal to align with the buyer's purchasing motivations.
Emotional-based questions can uncover the buyer's vision and aspirations. Asking, "What are your long-term goals for this initiative?" or "How do you hope this solution will change/improve your business?" helps the sales rep position their product or service as a pivotal component in achieving these goals.
