Emotional work.

Emotional work.

Collaboration is a human process. Which means it's an emotional one!

When we work with others, particularly when it gets tough, we often try to edit out, put the lid on, or outright deny our emotions. Emotions are often seen as something to 'manage' or 'deal with'. An unhelpful by-product of being human.

This feels odd when our feelings are real and part of the day-to-day of working and living together. What's more, we are ok with 'positive' emotions like excitement, joy, and enthusiasm and less ok with fear, disappointment, doubt and sadness.

What would happen if we could acknowledge (and even high-five!) the full range of our emotions? What could they reveal? What do they have to offer?

???[^] Reflective Exercise;?

  • How do you view or rate emotions?
  • How emotionally aware are you? Do you notice anger, joy, fear, hope and other feelings in yourself?
  • How are you responding to your colleagues emotions?
