“The Emotional Source Code of Decision Making: How Ignoring Your Emotions Can Cost You Your Leadership!”
Leaders often believe that controlling their emotions or disregarding them all together is a sign of strength, while in truth, emotions play a vital role in decision-making. Therefore, ignoring them creates a huge blind spot.
I’ve spent over thirty years codifying The Emotional Source Code and the Anatomy of Meaning. I’ve done this to accurately grasp what motivates individuals (and groups) to act as they do, even when it doesn’t make sense.
I’ve had the privilege of decoding the Emotional Source Code of influential people, organizations, and even entire countries. However, these people (and companies) frequently make the significant and often extremely costly error of underestimating the potency and significance of emotions in influencing people and organizations in a particular direction.
Research shows that emotions give the brain crucial information and direction. Emotions can be divided into two main components: changes happening inside the body state (physiology) and a collection of mental images from our Emotional Source Code and Anatomy of Meaning that trigger an emotional response.
A person’s body state changes when they experience emotion. For example, happiness might be characterized by a flushed face and relaxed muscles, while a frown and tightened muscles might indicate anger. Sensations such as these tell the brain that an emotion is being experienced in the body.
At the same time, the Emotional Source Code, a collection of mental images representing subjective meanings, triggers the emotional response. However, these triggers are not limited to visual memories; they can be sights, sounds, smells, or other perceptions. Combining these mental images and the body state (neuropsychological connection) generates emotion.
Body-Brain, Brain-Body Communication
The generation of emotion also serves as a powerful source of guidance for the brain. Positive emotions indicate something good for the person, while negative emotions signal something bad.
If the brain perceives something as good, the person will feel positive emotions and want to seek it out. Conversely, if the brain perceives something as bad, the person will avoid it.
A study by neuroscientist Dr. Antonio Damasio of USC showed that even when they could understand their options logically, people who had damage to the emotional centers of their brains struggled with decision-making. This highlights the crucial role that emotions play in guiding our decision-making.
In conclusion:
Leaders must acknowledge the significance of emotions in decision-making. Neglecting emotions can result in costly errors as they offer essential information and direction to the brain.

1 年Hi Dov - The connection between intuition and emotion seems obvious to me - and my gut informs most if not all of my big decisions. I noticed that when I facilitate groups that a quick check-in to find out what emotions came into the room with people at the beginning, and a few opportunities for emotions to be heard as things progress - can massively increase the productivity during a meeting with a goal of moving forward a project or series of tasks... 1 年It is fascinating to understand the vital role of our emotions in our decision-making process. As you have shown in this article, when we deny our emotions or if our emotional centre is impaired, our ability to make good decisions gets impaired. It makes me wonder if the "keeping feelings out of business" mentality is what triggered the many financial, economic, political, and climate crises we now face.
