Emotional Lighting Design

Following on from my post about emotional lighting which can be found here

and seeing so many professionals read my posts and be happy to continue the conversation I feel it is time to continue the discussion and ask you all to spread this message to a wider professional audience. We will all be benefiting if we continue to keep the subject in front of the whole community.

I have also started a group called emotional lighting design and I invite you all to apply to join. The aim of the group is to be able to discuss and share our thoughts on emotional lighting design and how the design process needs to include this aspect of emotion to enable the lighting of a space to be right for the user.

The group can be found here

If you are involved with a new build or refurbishment and would like you space to be unique and that lighting needs to be beneficial and creative for the location, that you consider the benefits of an emotional lighting design. This will create a better living and working environment for you and the users. Clients, Owners, Architects, Project Directors and Managers, Interior Designers, Electrical Consultants and Engineers, QS’s, Manufacturers, Suppliers and Distributors, I call upon you to help make the lighting for all projects better for the user. Now is the time to guide each project to become unique, forward thinking and beneficial to all who see and use the space.

I am Chris Watts of Chris Watts Lighting Design, a lighting design practice, and I have been designing lighting schemes for over 40 years. I am an advocate of emotional lighting design that creates emotional responses to spaces and situations. Please contact me for more information.

The human eye does not detect changes in illumination within 20% range. When entering from outside the building, if the building's lighting is regulated to within the 20% range of the exterior lighting, the visual is relaxed because it does not feel the environmental changes.
