Bed Talk 142 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYlRDVEqIGo) is about leadership in the face of overwhelming emotions, which is what’s happening right now due to COVID, the social justice unrest and the contentious political climate.
I’ve been alive for 61 years and it seems to me that this is the most dramatic and protracted period of emotional overwhelm that’s existed since I’ve been an adult.
Think about it? 9/11? The intense emotions of it lasted a few weeks everywhere other than in New York City. The rest of the country dealt with emotions, but not for 7 months and continuing.
The two wars in Iraq? The emotions were intense for short periods, but most of us didn’t have any impact in our lives.
But COVID? The predominate emotions the past seven months have been fear, anger, sadness, worry, anxiety … the list goes on and on. And leaders have been called upon to lead their people through this wild and ongoing ride of emotions.
The question is, What have you done as a leader to help and support your people on this emotional and ongoing roller coaster? For many of you the answer is nothing – you’ve adapted the ways you do business (e.g. remote working), but you’ve not done much in terms of emotional leadership.
That has to change because that’s the leadership that’s called for today and the emotions are continuing (and will continue). The only question is whether you will meet this moment of emotional turbulence with your leadership or avoid it and just focus on business?
This is a leadership call to action for empathy, vulnerability, compassion and humanness? Will you meet this leadership moment?
