We’ve all been there…. Once, twice, a few days back… very recently.
In the heat of the moment- impulse reaction, regret and misunderstandings…
It’s more common than we think. And we all know what it feels like to wish we had handled our emotions better in those moments.
Life would be easier if we learned to manage emotions, and hence controlled reactions.
For that My Friend, you need to work on and increase your EQ- Emotional Intelligence.
Let’s understand this ‘Buzzword’ first:
In its simplest form, Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the ability to recognize and understand your emotions, the triggers behind them and how they affect your thoughts and behaviour.
It's not just about knowing what you feel, but also about regulating those emotions so they don't take over your life and relationships.
The real power of EQ lies in how we manage our emotions while also empathizing with others.
And NO,
EQ is not about suppressing or ignoring emotions. Understanding and recognizing the why and what you feel is true emotional intelligence.
In total, Emotional Intelligence is the ability to:
? Recognize your own emotions and the reasons behind them.
? Regulate how you react to those emotions in different situations.
? Empathize with others and understand their emotional responses.
You can develop higher EQ by:-
?? Knowing yourself: Self-awareness is the first step. Understand what triggers you and reflect on how you react. This insight is the foundation of better emotional regulation.
?? Staying open to feedback: Feedback from others highlights your blind spots. Embrace it and use it as an opportunity to grow. No one is perfect, there’s always room for improvement.
?? Celebrating your emotions: Recognize and acknowledge your feelings throughout the day. The fact that you can identify your emotions is already an achievement. Celebrate it!
?? Practicing active listening: In conflicts, focus on listening empathetically. This creates space for understanding and helps you respond thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively.
