The Emotional Intelligence Revolution: Insights from Marc Brackett

The Emotional Intelligence Revolution: Insights from Marc Brackett

Day - ?? Transformational Tuesday??

?

"Technology connects us to the world, but emotional intelligence connects us to humanity." - Dr. Eric Goodman?

?

Earlier today I was doing some coaching work with an individual who shared that she was looking for a strategy to shift from certain beliefs and feelings that were no longer serving her to experiencing more empowering beliefs and?feelings that would allow her to step into being her future self. As we talked I was reminded of a session I attended a few days ago at the AI Revolution (AIR) event sponsored by the?ASU+GSV.?

I had the privilege of attending a session, "Keeping AI Real with EI: Preserving what it means to by human, where Dr. Marc Brackett of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence discussed the pivotal role of EI and our feelings in shaping our lives.? As leaders this is a critical area for us to understand. Through his book, "Permission to Feel," Marc advocates for an emotional revolution that transcends mere understanding and delves into the effective management and expression of emotions. His leadership in the field of EI is a testament to the transformative power of emotions in every facet of our lives, reminding us that while we may be in the age of AI, we must still give ourselves "Permission To Feel."?

This call for an emotional (or even feeling) revolution is timely. Our fast-paced world, with its technological marvels and challenges, demands a recalibration of how we approach EI.? His message is clear: it is not enough to know emotions; we must also harness their power for better decision-making and stronger interpersonal connections. ?

?

????The Power of EI in Education?

?

Over thirty-five years ago, emotional intelligence (EI) was introduced as a key concept in psychology. Today, the field of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is helping teachers bring it into classrooms and CEOs see it as essential to the 21st-century workplace. But as EI gained popularity so did digital technology, including social media and AI platforms. Why does this matter? Research shows that mental health and social connection have plummeted, in part, due to our over consumption of technology. It’s not impossible to course correct and there are real consequences if we don’t. ?

?

The power of Marc's work resonate in the educational domain.?He is doing pivotal work within the New York schools with the potential to impact well over a million students across 1600 schools. EI is not merely a tool for personal growth; it's a lifeline that can make the difference between burnout and resilience, despair and hope, and even life and death, for educators and students alike. ?

?

?? The Interplay of EI, Personality, and Technology?

EI's scope extends beyond individual application; it's interwoven with personality and cultural expressions. As Marc illustrates, while personality may shape how we express emotions, it doesn't constrain our capacity to experience or manage them. This is crucial in our globalized world, where a diverse workforce must navigate varying emotional expressions due to cultural, social, and individual differences.

The rise of technology, particularly AI and social media, has introduced new dynamics in how we connect and express emotions. Marc Brackett 's work underlines the importance of balancing our digital consumption with our emotional health, warning of the consequences of neglecting this balance. The digital era challenges us to maintain our humanity, and EI is a key player in this arena.

?

??? Reflecting on the Power of Emotions in the Workplace?

As Marc Brackett aptly puts it in his book, "We think of work as being driven by skill sets and information, by brainpower and experience, and by the hunger for achievement and accomplishment. All those things are in the mix, of course. But emotions are the most powerful force inside the workplace—as they are in every human endeavor. They influence everything from leadership effectiveness to building and maintaining complex relationships, from innovation to customer relations."?

?

?? Embracing EI in the Digital Landscape?

As we seek to embrace EI in our increasingly digital world, we must consider actionable opportunities that align with our emotional well-being. The 'How We Feel' app is one such tool that offers a practical way to track and manage our emotional state, an embodiment of the RULER approach's application in digital form. ?

A Call to Action for Emotional Intelligence?

Marc Brackett's contributions are a call to integrate EI into every facet of society. As we consider the impact of our decisions, the tools at our disposal, and the ways we can foster EI within our communities, it becomes evident that EI is integral to creating a more empathetic, understanding, and emotionally aware society. ?

?

?? Mood Meter and the RULER Approach?

Central to Marc's practical application of EI is the Mood Meter, a key component of the RULER approach. This innovative tool assists individuals in identifying and expressing their emotions by categorizing them based on energy and pleasantness. It's a testament to the approach's power that something so simple can have such a profound impact on individuals of all ages, aiding in self-awareness and emotional regulation. It encompasses five key skills: Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotions. Here’s how an individual could use the RULER approach, along with specific questions they might ask themselves at each step:?

?R - Recognizing Emotions: This is about being aware of your own emotions and those of others. It involves paying attention to thoughts, physical sensations, and the environment.?Observe and acknowledge the emotions of yourself and others.

Specific Questions to Ask:?

  • What physical sensations am I feeling right now, and what emotions might they be signaling??
  • What is my mood at this moment, and how can I tell (e.g., facial expression, body language)??
  • How do the people around me seem to be feeling based on their nonverbal cues??

?

U - Understanding Emotions: Understanding emotions entails comprehending the causes and consequences of your emotions and those of others.?Create safe spaces to discuss emotional triggers and their effects. Host workshops to delve into these dynamics.?

Specific Questions to Ask:?

  • What happened right before I started feeling this way??
  • How have these emotions affected my thoughts and actions so far??
  • Can I identify the potential consequences of these emotions on my behavior???

L - Labeling Emotions: Accurately labeling emotions requires a nuanced understanding of feeling words, which allows for more precise communication and better management of emotions.?Develop a robust emotional vocabulary to articulate feelings more accurately. Encourage the use of precise language for emotional expression. ?

Specific Questions to Ask:?

  • What word best describes what I am feeling right now? Is it anger, frustration, or perhaps disappointment??
  • Are my emotions complex, possibly a mix of feelings like anxiousness and excitement??
  • Do I need to expand my emotional vocabulary to express this feeling more accurately??

E - Expressing Emotions: Expressing emotions involves sharing your feelings in a way that is appropriate to the context and respectful of others.?This includes respecting the diversity of personalities and cultural backgrounds. Conduct role-playing exercises to practice professional expression. ??

Specific Questions to Ask:?

  • What is the most constructive way for me to express how I feel right now??
  • Who should I express these emotions to, and what is the best setting to do so??
  • How can I communicate my feelings in a way that is honest but also considerate of the feelings of others??

?

R - Regulating Emotions: Regulating emotions is the skill of managing your emotions in a healthy way, so they don't control you but instead you guide them in a way that serves your well-being and goals.?Equip individuals with strategies like mindfulness and deep breathing to manage emotions constructively. Formulate personal emotional regulation plans for challenging situations. ?

Specific Questions to Ask:?

  • What strategies can I use to manage my current emotional state? (e.g., deep breathing, taking a walk, talking to a friend)?
  • How can I reframe my thinking about this situation to feel more empowered and less overwhelmed??
  • What long-term strategies can I implement to handle similar emotions more effectively in the future??

?

?????Actionable Tips for Leaders to Champion EI?

To lead with emotional intelligence, here are a few strategies:?

  • Integrate the Mood Meter: Foster a culture where emotions are acknowledged and understood, using tools to facilitate this process. ?
  • Neuroscience-backed Strategies: Employ techniques like mindfulness that are grounded in neuroscience to manage workplace stress and foster a positive environment.
  • Regular Check-ins: Maintain open communication channels with regular emotional check-ins to proactively address team concerns.
  • Training and Development: Offer ongoing EI training, providing resources to help employees manage stress and improve emotional awareness.
  • Lead by Example: Model emotional intelligence in your leadership, demonstrating appropriate emotional expression.

?

Reflection Questions for a Holistic EI Approach?

As we integrate Brackett's insights, consider these additional reflection questions to deepen EI in your life and organization:?

  • How often do you assess the emotional impact of your decisions on others??
  • In what ways can you champion emotional intelligence within your team or organization??
  • How can the insights from neuroscience enhance your understanding and management of emotions for yourself and others??

And now, consider the following:?

  • Do you feel equipped to support your team in navigating their emotions, especially in high-pressure situations??
  • What strategies can you put in place to ensure technology is used to support rather than undermine emotional well-being??
  • How can the principles of the RULER approach be applied to digital communication to enhance empathy and understanding??

Incorporating Marc Brackett's comprehensive approach to emotional intelligence, with a keen understanding of its importance in the digital age, we stand on the precipice of a transformative shift. By embracing the RULER approach and leveraging technology mindfully, we can foster environments where emotional intelligence is not just present but thrives, guiding our decisions with compassion and insight.?

?? Reflection Questions ?

In embracing Marc Brackett's strategies and insights, we are invited to ask ourselves:?

  • In the morning, do we look forward to the day ahead, or do we seek refuge under the covers, and why??
  • How accurately can we discern our emotions and those of others, and what can we do to improve this skill??
  • What strategies can we employ to better regulate our emotions and assist others in their emotional journey??
