There are many philosophies about what makes highly effective leaders. Empathy, accountability, integrity, and creativity—you name it—are common keywords when used to describe great leaders. But ultimately, developing these traits starts with one concept, and we may not always connect the dots. That concept is emotional intelligence.
?
Developing true emotional intelligence is the foundation for becoming a great leader. Sure, you need to be able to delegate and know how to grow sales and the bottom line, but without practicing emotional intelligence, I can assure you that those things will never happen.
?
This article will discuss emotional intelligence (EI), its key components, and its impact on leadership effectiveness. We’ll also explore some real-life examples of leaders who incorporate EI into their approach and those who do not.
What is Emotional Intelligence?
Emotional intelligence, often given the abbreviation of EI or EQ (emotional quotient), is the capability of recognizing, understanding, and managing our own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. The concept was made popular by psychologist Daniel Goleman, who documented five key components of EI:
●????? Self-Awareness: This is all about learning to recognize and understand one's own emotions. Self-aware leaders can accurately assess their strengths and weaknesses. This encourages confidence and the ability to act humbly.
●????? Self-Regulation: The ability to control or redirect disruptive emotions and impulses. Leaders who self-regulate can stay calm under pressure and maintain control over their emotional reactions.
●????? Motivation: A passion for work that goes beyond money and status. Motivated leaders are driven to achieve for the sake of achievement, and they inspire the same drive in their teams.
●????? Empathy: This is about understanding the emotional composition and uniqueness of other people. Empathetic leaders can connect with their team members on a deeper level, regardless of their level in the organization. Doing so helps build a more supportive and inclusive work environment.
●????? Social Skills: Proficiency in managing relationships in a positive manner based on mutual respect and building networks. Leaders with strong social skills are effective communicators and can easily manage complex social situations.
The Significance of Emotional Intelligence for Leaders
We’ve all seen the statistics. An estimated 35% of people leave a job because they feel disrespected. And while disrespect can occur anywhere in an organization, in most cases, the disrespect is from the person responsible for leading their team. Yet, what causes leaders to be disrespectful? Why do they do it? Well, it all lies in a lack of emotional intelligence.
Consider these reasons why emotional intelligence needs to be a priority among leaders at any level.
●????? More Effective Communication: Leaders with strong EI can communicate more effectively, ensuring their message is clear and well-received. This helps to prevent misunderstandings and promotes a culture of openness and trust.
●????? Better Conflict Resolution: Emotionally intelligent leaders are adept at navigating conflicts and finding solutions that satisfy all parties involved. This reduces workplace tension and improves overall team cohesion.
●????? Increased Empathy: Empathetic leaders understand and respond to their team members' needs, which leads to higher job satisfaction and lower turnover rates.
●????? Improved Decision-Making: Leaders who are self-aware and can regulate their emotions are better equipped to make sound decisions, even under pressure.
Emotional Intelligence and Well-Being Competencies
Search online to learn about emotional intelligence, and you’ll find countless articles correlating high emotional intelligence with happiness. A recent article from CNBC suggests that those with high emotional intelligence also have emotional sovereignty. People with this skill are better able to manage their emotions rather than ignoring or suppressing them. The result is a happier and healthier disposition overall.
Here is how EI, and emotional sovereignty can have a positive impact on well-being and leadership performance.
●????? Expressing Needs: Leaders with high EI can articulate their needs clearly and assertively, which makes sure requirements are met without causing friction.
●????? Mitigating Stress: By understanding and managing their emotions, leaders can reduce stress-inducing conflicts and maintain calm during challenging situations. This can be especially helpful as responding in kind to the situation is human nature. When the leader is calm, the employee is more likely to handle something calmly as well.

●????? Self-Regulation: Emotionally intelligent leaders can self-regulate during emotionally charged situations, which helps to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
●????? Responding to Feedback: Leaders with strong EI can handle feedback constructively and are open to receiving feedback from employees at all levels. They look at all feedback as an opportunity for growth rather than a source of frustration.
Leaders with High Emotional Intelligence
These are examples of great leaders with high emotional intelligence all around us, but we might not always put the pieces of the puzzle together. Consider the following well-known leaders.
Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft)
Nadella is known for his empathetic leadership style and focus on transforming Microsoft’s culture. He emphasizes the importance of empathy and emotional intelligence in driving innovation and fostering a collaborative work environment.
Oprah Winfrey
Oprah’s ability to connect with people on an emotional level has been a key factor in her success. Her empathetic approach has made her a beloved figure and an influential leader.
Low Emotional Intelligence
While Steve Jobs was known as a visionary and highly successful leader until his untimely passing in 2011 due to pancreatic cancer, many people consistently spoke out about how he was difficult to work with.
There are countless stories of his lack of empathy and volatile temper, despite his business success. And unfortunately, his low emotional intelligence leadership style caused strained relationships.
Leading Without Emotional Intelligence is Not an Option
Leading without emotional intelligence is simply not a viable option in business today, especially with the new generation entering the workforce. Leaders who lack EI are likely to face numerous challenges, including:
●????? High Employee Turnover: A lack of empathy and poor emotional management can create a toxic work environment, leading to high employee turnover and difficulty in retaining top talent.
●????? Ineffective Communication: Leaders without EI may struggle to communicate effectively, resulting in misunderstandings, confusion, and a lack of trust among team members.
●????? Poor Conflict Management: Leaders need to know how to work through conflicts constructively to avoid exacerbating tensions and creating a divisive workplace.
