Emotional Intelligence Awareness

Emotional Intelligence Awareness

Theodore Roosevelt quoted that “No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.’.

?As children, we must have the story of the Monkey and the Crocodile several times. Where the two were friends and used to cherish sweet fruits from a tree. One day when the crocodile invites the monkey to his house and offers to carry him on his back revealing the actual purpose of taking him home (where the crocodile’s wife wants to eat the monkey’s heart). The monkey being in a critical situation decides not to lose his cool and comes up with a brilliant idea of saving his own life.

?Now how many of us actually have this gift of thinking calmly without getting flustered? Do situations or stress or challenges boggle us down? Are there times when we have hastily acted and then regretted our actions? Have we been at awkward moments where we cannot express what we feel or what we are going through? This ability to think, act and respond is emotional intelligence.

?What is emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence (EI) refers to the ability to perceive, control, and evaluate emotions. Some researchers suggest that emotional intelligence can be learned and strengthened, while others claim it's an inborn characteristic.

?Emotional Intelligence on the other hand refers to the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically: (dictionary)

?The ability to express and control our emotions is essential but so is the ability to understand, interpret, and respond to the emotions of others. Listening to our own emotions and watching how to feel and respond is good but if we were to understand the emotions of others then that would help us in a million ways.

?How does Emotional Intelligence help?

  • Emotional intelligence helps to relate to others in much better and more effective ways.
  • Necessitates the need to admit and learn from mistakes, thus cutting down on the major ego issues in the organization.

  • Molds a leader to take criticism positively.
  • It helps to stay calm even when under pressure.

?Components of emotional intelligence

This enables a person to know how to react to different people and different situations that arise in the workplace. People who are self-aware, are in most cases, self-confident too. The only way to improve one’s Self-awareness is to step out of one comfort zone.

?Self-Regulation: It is the art of regulating one’s emotions to be able to manage and have self-control over them. also necessitates the need to manage one’s thoughts, emotions, and behavior to get positive results.

?Motivation: People with high EI tend to be more positive and optimistic in their approach. Thus, making them highly motivated. Also, they are more flexible with their work and possess the ability to handle any situation.

?Empathy: Empathy is very important for every working person, especially for people in leadership roles. It is very important to put oneself in the other person’s shoes to ensure there is a good mutual connection between the employees.
