The Emotional Impact of "A Star Is Born" And Substance Abuse

With the renewed focus on mental health and drawing from my own personal experience, I decided to share this post that I originally wrote on Facebook. It is based on my personal experiences, as well as many friends and family members that have had to deal with substance abuse in their lives. I shared my observations privately in an online support group I belong to, and the response was pretty universal along these lines. The trailer did not give emough of an overview to prepare us for what we might see.

I had, on the whole, a great weekend. I started it by seeing the latest rendition of "A Star Is Born". I have seen both the Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand versions. I want to start by saying that I really loved the movie. I thought the acting was good, the music awesome.

But I was unprepared for the emotional trigger for me personally - the scenes that played out involving Bradley Cooper's character as an addict really shook me. If you have never lived with someone that has an alcohol or substance abuse problem, you honestly don't know the meaning of "walking on egg shells." When someone you love is an addict, you literally don't know when you walk in a room if you will be interacting with Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde. You don't know if you will be having a normal conversation or whether you are in for a diatribe about how worthless you are, that everything wrong in the other person's life is somehow your fault. You don't know what it is like to have to try and carry someone into the house drunk, stoned, or high because they cannot walk on their own power. You haven't had to face a sleepless night wondering where the other person is because it is 4:30 in the morning and they aren't home, and you haven't had a text or phone call; and then faced accusations of being "controlling" the next day.

If you HAVE dealt with anything resembling the above, and you have been planning on seeing the movie, be aware that there are some powerfully moving scenes that may trigger you.

I don't tolerate any kind of abuse very well. What I do is to go no contact and not waist my time with people who lack self awareness and show zero interest on how they affect other's people life.
