Emotional health- A briefing...

Emotional health is one of the aspects of mental health. The most important one. It’s the ability to cope with negative emotion as well as having complete awareness about negative emotions.

Emotional wellness is tied with physical health. People experiencing greater amount of stress and negative emotion will sometimes develop other health problems. Actually problems are not caused by negative feelings but by behaviors that negative emotion can influence. For example, excessive smoking?or drinking to relieve stress. It ultimately causes harm to user’s physical health.

[Mental illness often have deeper causes like trauma or chemical imbalance whereas emotional health has more to do with emotional regulations, awareness & coping skills.]

Importance :

Working on emotional health is just as important as taking care of physical health. It has some variety of effects that can change our mood at any point of time.

1.??????Resilience to stress: - Research shows that emotional distress make you more vulnerable to physical illness. With increasing stress your substance use rate will go high to cope with the situation and thus your physical health will be prone to be unwell.

2.??????Deeper relationships:- When you’re equipped with the skills to manage your emotions, it’s easier for you to connect with others & show more compassion. You can be able to hold arguments and talk through your feelings.

3.??????Higher self esteem:- Good emotional health helps you to see the best in yourself despite all challenges.

4.??????More energy:- having a positive outlook makes you more energized and helps you to think more clearly.

1.??????Self isolation.

2.??????Lower energy level.

3.??????Sleep disorder.

4.??????Distorted food habit.

5.??????Excessive substance use.

6.??????Racing thoughts.

1.??????Emotional regulation:- Learning and practicing coping strategies will enable you to respond instead of reacting to a negative situation. Some known coping strategies are, meditation / journaling / listening to music / talking to a therapist.

2.??????Brighten your outlook?:-???Remember your good deeds and pat yourself.

  • ·????????Practice gratitude.
  • ·????????Spend quality time with friends.
  • ·????????Grow healthy physical habits.
  • ·????????Think about how to guide your life by important principles.

3.??????De-stress yourself :-??????????Some known methods are

  • ·????????Be physically active.
  • ·????????Build a social support network.
  • ·????????Set priorities like this order à must> should> have to.
  • ·????????Self compassion.
  • ·????????Fix a schedule for relaxation.
  • ·????????Don’t hesitate to seek help.

4.??????Quality sleep:-??It means how regularly and deeply you fall asleep.

  • ·????????Sleep in a dark, quiet and comfortable environment.
  • ·????????Limit the use of electronics before bedtime.
  • ·????????Relax your mind before going to bed by reading books or having?hot bath.
  • ·????????Avoid large meal before bedtime.
  • ·????????Avoid stimulants before going to bed.
  • ·????????Don’t hesitate to see a doctor in case of acute sleep disorder.

5.??????Cope with loss:-?losses are inevitable in every life. Don’t get carried away from reality.

  • ·????????Don’t take major decisions instantly.

  • ·????????Whenever you’re in a new place, try to meet new people.

7.??????Mindfulness:-?it means to be focused on happening present. There are many ways to practice mindfulness.????

  • ·????????Enjoy a stroll.
  • ·????????Practice deep breathing.
  • ·????????Mindful eating.
  • ·????????Connect with “I”. concentrate on every body part and scan with emotion, feel them individually.
  • ·????????Learn some guided meditation which can help you to repair and reorder your distorted thoughts, if any.
