Emma Willard Belongs in the Pantheon of Data Visualization
Bill Shander
Keynote speaker, workshop leader, LinkedIn Learning Instructor focused on information design, data storytelling & visualization, and creativity
There may be literally no other data visualization practitioner who had more influence and impact on the world of her time than Emma Willard. And yet, most of you have probably never heard of her.
But odds are that you have seen, at least in passing, one or two of her most widely distributed visuals. And by widely distributed, we're talking about, in some cases a million copies, made and used in schools across the United States in the early- to mid-19th century.
Lesson: Emma Willard
In this lesson, I introduce a bit of background about Emma Willard, and make a brief but compelling case for her inclusion in the pantheon of data visualization masters.
Listen: Emma Willard with Susan Schulten
In this conversation, University of Denver professor Susan Schulten tells us more about Emma Willard's life and philosophy of education and her innovative use of visualizations in her work. Schulten wrote Emma Willard, Maps of History, the definitive book of Willard's work, published by Visionary Press.

I never knew of the “data visualization” side to her life story. So glad I stumbled upon this. Hope all is well in Hop town!
